Members BottomHeavyKate
MIM Fender Jazz - black body, black pickgard, silver hardware, needs some TLC. The body and neck are in good shape but the paint is scratched to {censored} on the back. OLP MusicMan, Natural Finish, white pickgard, in very very good condition. They both need a little work - both are $200 - both four stringers (of which I don't own any yet except for my EUB)

Members catphish
I'd probably go for the Fender with the "reliced" back.

Members hi.flyer
Are the OLPs passive or do they have a preamp?
Members BottomHeavyKate
What kind of work does the OLP need? Just a set up to get it playable. I've never modded a bass in any way and I think this might be a fun opportunity to start....

Members Poltergeist
i'd rather go with a Squier Vintage Modified then with any one those, actually... but i'd go with the MIM Fender if i had to choose between those.

Members Brother Mango
got a Dremel I can borrow Ahh....the true test of lubs.... 1. Throw your shoes at T. Alan. Fodera? Who's gonna take a dremel to a Fodera? That's not a test of love; that's a test of "can I throw enough money around to force a particular outcome?" 2. I have 3 dremel tools, a bunch of routing bits, sanding drums, buffing pads, a drill press, shaping table, and a router attachment. I have a modder's carnival over here! Capacitors, a digital soldering station, bartop finish, a drill, polymer clay ... What else??? 3. I have some shoes to throw at T. Alan. Any one else wanna get in line? Members georgestrings
I have *heard* that those OLP's are susceptible to having trussrod issues - if you do decide to go that way, make sure you can flatten the neck sufficiently enough for a good action... Personally, I'd go MIM Jazz, given the choices - or, pony up a little more $$$ and go VMJ, as Poltergeist suggested - you won't regret it... - georgestrings
Members hi.flyer
The Jazz is pretty solid, but depending on how old it is, it might have some weird design quirks. I had an MIM J a few years ago and, in the course of wanting to upgrade the pickups, realized that both were of the same dimensions (normally the bridge pickup is a little bit wider). Not a big deal really, yea, but especially if you want to mod it that might be an issue.
Members J.
I'd go with the jazz bass and try your hand at refinishing. At the very least, strip all the paint off with chemical stripper (there are some that will eat up a poly finish), sand sand sand sand sand, and apply some sort of varnish. You could also try repainting. Next up, new pickups, pots, etc. Maybe a new bridge.
Members lug
More aftermarket stuff for the MIM Fender. I've found that MIM Fenders since early 2000's to be quite good and much more consistent than in the old days. Don't have any experience with OLPs, though.
