MIM Fender Jazz - black body, black pickgard, silver hardware, needs some TLC. The body and neck are in good shape but the paint is scratched to {censored} on the back.

OLP MusicMan, Natural Finish, white pickgard, in very very good condition.

They both need a little work - both are $200 - both four stringers (of which I don't own any yet except for my EUB)

got a Dremel I can borrow
:)

Ahh....the true test of lubs....

1. Throw your shoes at T. Alan. Fodera? Who's gonna take a dremel to a Fodera? That's not a test of love; that's a test of "can I throw enough money around to force a particular outcome?"

2. I have 3 dremel tools, a bunch of routing bits, sanding drums, buffing pads, a drill press, shaping table, and a router attachment. I have a modder's carnival over here!

Capacitors, a digital soldering station, bartop finish, a drill, polymer clay ...

What else???

3. I have some shoes to throw at T. Alan. Any one else wanna get in line?

I have *heard* that those OLP's are susceptible to having trussrod issues - if you do decide to go that way, make sure you can flatten the neck sufficiently enough for a good action...

Personally, I'd go MIM Jazz, given the choices - or, pony up a little more $$$ and go VMJ, as Poltergeist suggested - you won't regret it...

The Jazz is pretty solid, but depending on how old it is, it might have some weird design quirks. I had an MIM J a few years ago and, in the course of wanting to upgrade the pickups, realized that both were of the same dimensions (normally the bridge pickup is a little bit wider). Not a big deal really, yea, but especially if you want to mod it that might be an issue.

I'd go with the jazz bass and try your hand at refinishing. At the very least, strip all the paint off with chemical stripper (there are some that will eat up a poly finish), sand sand sand sand sand, and apply some sort of varnish. You could also try repainting.

Next up, new pickups, pots, etc. Maybe a new bridge.
