Bad HDD???

OK, so I was trying to rebuild a computer last night, and inserted a WinXP boot disk. Booted up fine, allowed me to delete partition and format HDD.

Begins Windows install, and gives me an error about "cannot create folder". So I shut down, reboot (from CD again) and re-partition HDD. Goes back into install, gets past previous error and gives me a new error about "cannot copy file *such and such*".

I'm not sure of the history of the computer, only that I got it free from an IT friend here at work. He said it was fine when he put it in his closet a year ago, but then he took some stuff off of the HDD before giving it to me.

Could this be a bad HDD? Or are there other issues possibly? I know the XP disc is good.

Suggestions?

Mac guy here but it seems to me that if you're running the machine off of a known good install disk and you're still getting failures, there's a hardware issue somewhere. So yep, I'd agree that the drive is probably bad. Drives are way cheap now though so it shouldn't cost you too much to get up and going.
