Members RIC N BACKER
I dont use Effects with my bass often. I had a digitech Bass Synth Wah and only use it when {censored}ing around at home. I play classic rock from 60's to todays types of Rock/metal so the synth Wah doesnt really fit into that stuff too much. I want to get distortion because I like what it does for Guitar and for the overdrive sounds like Geezer,Jack Bruce and Roger Glover and others like them from that era. The Bass metaphors looks like it will do that without being to over the top like the Digitech Metalmaster if you know what I mean. Whats the Compressors role? it sounds to me like it reduces the overall tone like you are playing through a tiny speaker withoutloosing the bottom end. Please enlighten me to the crompressors role or suggest a box to look at for what I am trying to achieve thanks

Members Optimus Prime
Pick up something like a used Fulltone Bass-Drive or Homebrew Electronics Hematoma for some grit. And an Electro-Harmonix Micro Q-Tron to bring the funk.

The EH page doesnt have good samples... I will take a look at what you suggested. thanks

I have played the EH pedal in question. The distortion is right up your alley, subtle, never in your face. I'd say it adds a medium grit to your tone. It's a preamp pedal that has a single setting compressor and a limited amount of added gain (distortion). Note that... it is not an effects pedal, it is a preamp first, with some simple effects second that help you dial in the preamp's tone.

Thanks Ren for the first part of your reply...say I am playing Sunshine of your love or NIB and I want to distort it a little but not go dog nuts, this pedal is it....but sounds limited.I hate to sound ignorant but alas......Pre amp is a word that gets thrown around here so much but I havent the faintest Idea what the hell that means:facepalm: are all effect boxes or what ever you use a PRE amp? It is in front of the bass and before the amp...hence Pre? I know Daotd contender but what the hell I gotaa ask lol
Members RIC N BACKER
so I have come down to 2 choices the Digitech Bass Driver and The Electro-Harmonix Bass Big Muff Pi Distortion Pedal I am leaning towards the EH... looked at the Ibenez phat head and it sounds kind of weak. I looked at the ones OP suggested but didnt dig them....
Members RIC N BACKER
I figured I would get a new cable also. I Bought 2 Dimarzio bables a few years back and they are very good but I checked out Monster cables. First of all the price! what the hell is that but then I read up about it. are they really that much better than other cables? I find this funny next to the price $49.95 - Finance Now

It is in front of the bass and before the amp...hence Pre? In simplest terms "preamp" typcially assumes some level of EQ and gain balancing that brings the signal up (or down) to the proper level to feed an amp. On your amp it is all the knobs that come before the Master volume. This is an EQ pedal with a switchable fixed compressor and a mild OD. But it does a really great job, don't get me wrong. I put one before the Micro POG when I was demoing it and it brought it to life way better than stock, but it's likely going to be something that you turn on and leave in place. It's pretty big for a pedal that really does offer limited functionality if you are just seeking a true effect pedal.

I actually ordered the Digitech Bass driver and the Bug Muff this morning. I have to A/B them I would have ordered the Metaphones too but they were out of stock... I hate that Guitar shops only set up a guitar pedal board for demos in the stores. It makes it so hard to buy something before you try it.
Members pvcmedia
no opinions?? I just drove 40 miles to pick mine up and I will be losing another lunch hour (give or take a few minutes ;0( ) tomorrow to take it back. There are two issues that killed it for me. 1. The hiss the unit generates in intolerable. Before anyone comments...I know all about compressors and how they raise the noise floor. I have used everything from a DOD piece of junk up to the Manley in my studio. I even tried this with two 3 foot mogami cables. 2. The manual states that if you plug in an unbalanced 1/4" jack to the main out then the XLR becomes unbalanced as well. Call me crazy, but that makes it useless as a DI in a live situation. If you want to feed your bass amp from the 1/4" (I am unaware of any bass amps that have balanced inputs) then you can forget about running your signal down a snake. I guess this case of GAS passed rather quickly.
