Members xoeo
A friend of mine that has always wanted to play cello has 500$ in her bank account for a car. I am trying to convince her to spend the money on a cello instead of a car she doesn't need, much better investment IMO. Anyways can a decent beginners cello be had for sub 500$ range? Members Senator
Maybe you should get her to rent one first.
Members xoeo
I was always under the impression that purchasing an instrument like this ends up being a better deal than renting one,but I will def look into it!

Members Senator
I'm not entirely sure anyone on the board plays Cello? I do. Not too seriously, but I play pretty often. Though, I don't know much about cellos 'n such. Had lessons and then self taught. I play a Stradivarius copy, but it's not actually mine.

Members xoeo
Its not,she just didn't think that she could get a cello in that price range. I thought maybe if I found one around that price range it would motivate her.
Members Senator
Visit some local music stores with her to check cellos out and ask around. They're really fun. I started playing the cello before I picked up bass guitar.

Members rpsands
No such thing as a 500.00 car It'll be 500, then registration/license, insurance, repairs, maintenance, tires, brakes, etc etc.
Members xoeo
Why doesn't she need a car? She lives at home with her mom and works with your mom therefore rides to work with her mom. I really don't see any other need for a car besides getting to work and she is planning on staying there as far as I know.

Members blueyedmule
Five bens gets you more bass than cello. It won't get you much of a cello. Mine ran almost three grand. I got my upright at a steal for $2500 years ago and, after selling it for the same, realized I could have gotten nearly double for it. Live and learn. . .anyway, five hundred might get you an entry-level student instrument, maybe. Maybe. . .ask around the local music shops, see what's in your local market, best I can say. Members jonathan_matos5
$500 will get a decent rental but the cello she would own wound most likely be unplayable.
Members Crescent Seven
which is the better buy? $500 cello or $500 car? The $500 car. At least you're not expecting much, and when it breaks down you can sell it for scrap. Cellos are expensive. She's better served to save up some more skrilla and buy something nicer.C7
