The serial number puts it as a '62 Can anyone shed any light? Could it be a factory P/Jazz type affair? I know they do make P's with a jazz pickup in the bridge position. Either way, if the price stays right I might have it. I need a bass and I get on with the Jazz neck much better, but like the look and sound of a P... Members Super Bass
It looks like a relic done with a belt sander. It's probably a Squier or other copy that has been repainted? and relogo'd.
Members Flogger59
If it is a real 62 it's underpriced, even with the mods, but the description does not lead me to believe that it is.
CMS Author Craig Vecchione Posted January 14, 2009 CMS Author Share Posted January 14, 2009 The P-bass Special did not exist in 1962. I don't recall ever seeing a painted Jazz neck that far back either, or even that color. Then there's the odd black layer that appears only on the front of the bass, but not the back. The seller is being intentionally vague in describing and showing this frankenbass dog.

Uh, they made a few what could be classified as custom p bass specials in 62 but not production models I think they classified them as custom PJ however I do think it is a counterfeit relic

I searched to see when they started making P-b S's and can't find anything definitive at all. Love to see anything that old in this configuration. Members Jazz Ad
Looks to me like a bad relic job on an otherwise fine Jazz Special, complete with fake neck plate.
Members Perfessor
The white on the back of the neck is the give away. All the old basses I've seen have some darkening of the worn neck finish. This is white as if someone had some acid on a glove and handled the neck.
