Bass Preamps

If I had my choice I'd probably go with an SWR Grand Prix or an Eden Navigator. Both have lots of features and adjustable output levels that are clearly explained.

I used to use a GK 2001 RBP, which is sufficient for some power amps but not all. Pretty nice, sounds great, sounds like a 1001 RB II, but if you can only use QSC or Yamaha, and you want to try different brands or something, you're a little out of luck. For sound, I like it a lot.

The big thing you need to watch out for is the output level. Lots of preamps put out nowhere near the required voltage. Especially cheaper ones.

The Eden has an internal switch that you can select from only two output voltage settings, and you have to open the whole chassis up to get at it. If those settings don't match up well to your amp you might not get acceptable levels. Also they have a tendency to have failures in the powering-up muting circuits, which gradually kill the output levels. Mine was never strong in output, even when new, and especially over time. It was a most unreliable preamp that just didn't ever have enough output strength.

The Alembic (FB1?) is a killer, simple pre, modelled after a Showman amp. I used one to record demos in the 80's, and that thing made any bass sound good, and sit well in the mix.

Alembic F1-X. If, for some reason, you need two channels, get the F2-B. 1U of bassy goodness. Volume, bass, mid, treble controls, deep switch, bright switch and bi-amping controls. I'll never get rid of mine.
