Members yanikins
Good morning lads and ladettes. Im Kinda new around these parts (and to bass in general) and was pondering something about my new Bass. Its a Geddy Lee edition Fender Jazz (jap) and it has this (i think) peculiar trait where the volume pots gain "heaps" in the last few degrees of movement. Seeing as both of them do this, im assuming its a design feature of the pots and I was just wondering if anyone could shed some light on why they do this. Ive played a few gigs and had sound techs tell me to turn them up all the way to which i respond "F*** OFF" because i quite like the smoother sound i get before they hit that extra gain. Also wondering if this is a feature of most passive basses/most fenders, and if i should try running into an active input due to the higher gain. Anyway thanks in advance guys. Members Ender_rpm
IIRC, that means they may be linear pots, rather than logarithmic- basically they increase or decrease volume at a set rate, rather than in a curved line like the human ear perceives it. If you like the sound, rock on, but maybe get an active DI box with a bit of a volume boost to it to feed the FOH. They get a strong, clean signal, you get the sound you like, everyone is happy. Members blueyedmule
I have the same bass, I hadn't noticed any big gain jump, or the bass being terribly hot in output. Then again, I'm comparing it to a couple of my basses that have Dimarzio Willpower pickups in them. Now those basses are crazy-loud/hot output. And I do run my Geddy Jazz wide-open usually, or with one pickup barely rolled back.
