Members Optimus Prime Posted January 17, 2009 Members Posted January 17, 2009 Lame question, I know. I just spent about $200 on some new clothes. Got 6 shirts. A bright red one, a gray and white bold striped one, a blue and white thinner striped one, a orange and white bold striped one, a plain white, and a plain black. I know the red one has to be washed alone. I'm considering washing everything alone. But think I might throw the blue and white and the gray and white ones in together. Yes or no? I've always steered away from buying shirts that have a bright color next to white because they always seem to run and stain the white portion. Always. What should I do? Thanks.

Members Sugarskull Posted January 17, 2009 Members Posted January 17, 2009 You can probably get way with mixing the grey and blue stripe together. Drop a bit of vinegar in the wash wash em in cold.If the blue is quite bright, maybe wash it separately. I hate white stripes for this very reason.
Members Thumper Posted January 17, 2009 Members Posted January 17, 2009 They all just say "machine wash cold with like colors". Do tell... Probably for a good reason, too. Blues and grays together should be fine. Wash the whites and reds by themselves in cold water for the first couple runs through the machine.
Members Funkee1 Posted January 17, 2009 Members Posted January 17, 2009 Add about half a cup of vinegar to the water, especially for the red shirt. It'll help lock the dye in.

Mark, do you really think people are going to listen to laundry advice from a dude who's moniker is 'Funkee'? I'm just sayin'... :poke:

Members dethblow Posted January 17, 2009 Members Posted January 17, 2009 I always wash on cold, no matter what and dry on the lowest setting possible. Clothes fit like new and look like new.
Members Oddsock Posted January 17, 2009 Members Posted January 17, 2009 Wow, this is a manly thread... +1 I'd wash them all together in cold water and dry them on low. Anything that doesn't survive wasn't worthy.
Members Brother Mango Posted January 17, 2009 Members Posted January 17, 2009 Awww Just put the crap in the washing machine! for at least 20 years I've put all of my clothes in the same wash. Maybe towels and sheet together, separate from shirts & pants. But if the load is small enough, it's all going in together. And it's been FINE. Just wash the stuff dammit! Or take it to a dry-cleaner. Or just don't wear any goddamn clothes if it's gotta be this complicated! Maybe you don't deserve to wear clothes!
Members Flâneur Posted January 17, 2009 Members Posted January 17, 2009 After you've put in the vinegar, add some bicarbonate of soda.
Members Cpt. Spliff Posted January 17, 2009 Members Posted January 17, 2009 You just do as Sugargirl (and, wow, Funkee) advised. Unless you happen to live with a woman. In that case you wash everything together in very warm water and you will never have to do the washing again

Members bassman1956 Posted January 17, 2009 Members Posted January 17, 2009 I separate loads as whites, yellow-orange-red-browns, blue-green-grey-blacks, and jeans with hand towels or whatever's leftover. Mainly I do this because I have enough clothes to do it, and my own W/D. When I was younger, equally split between 2 loads and 4 dryers so I could get the f out of the laundromat as fast as possible. I do all on gentle cycles, and use a bit of oxy whatever and soak time on stuff that needs a little extra help.
Members Crescent Seven Posted January 17, 2009 Members Posted January 17, 2009 Aluminum powder and sulfuric acid is WAY cooler if you do that with it. Especially holding the lid on with your hand.C7
