Members Jessz1
Local guy has a 1975 Sunn Concert Bass Head for sale. He is asking 150.00 bucks. Decent head or should I stay away from it?
Members bassman1956
If it workes, yes. If it doesn't, do you have an amp tech you can drag along with you?

Members dethblow
Pretty much any old SUNN amp is worth it. At that price and if doesn't need much work, he probably doesn't know the true value of these babies. Tell you what else is nice and starting to go up in value. old Sano amps. Awesome, similiar in Ampeg sound (they were actually made down the road from ampeg in the 60's in NJ) Something to snap up if you see them. Members bnyswonger
If you need a reliable backup head, that's a decent price. The SS sunn stuff doesn't really have a distinctive sound, but they are tough.

Members Jessz1
Thanks guys. I am ampless right now. I need something and was wondering if it would be a decent amp or not. Price seems right. I may go check it out.
Members Jessz1
Also, is there a place that they stamp the date on the amp? I would like to verify the year when I go look at it. Thanks.

Thanks. the serial number of the amp will indicate the year it was made in. to answer your other post if it is in good working condition and not anf in at least fair looking condition and it is in your price range pull the trigger. it is just that I was not really all that fond of Sunn equipment
Members Thumper
If it works, buy it. Concert heads are solid state, so it's not going to sound too much like the great tube Sunn heads of yore. Still, the price is about right for a decent example. Members RootVegetable
Had one and toured with in in the late 70s. Survived plane flights and boat rides and lots of mistreatment, but... it sounded like crap the entire time I used it. Zero decent sound until I got a 10-band graphic and boosted practically everything. Amazingly, it took it and sounded almost good. The magic smoke spectacularly escaped first set, second song at a gig in the middle of nowhere. The power transistors were fried. After a ten week wait for parts, the tech said "these transistors are really getting hard to find." I got if fixed, and after living with its 175 watts (that sounded like 20 with a Rick 4003 and a 2x15 Sunn cab) for a few more months, finally got rid of the POS. I play with a light touch, and I needed an amp to move air. Wrong amp for me, but ahhhh...I was young and didn't know much. I picked up an SVT in the music store before buying the Sunn and thought "what kind of idiot would buy one of these when something as light as the Sunn is out?" I now own two 300W tube heads and sold the Sunn years ago for $75. I wanted to give it to the guy, but he insisted on paying me something. Different strokes and all, but if the transistors truly ARE hard to find these days, on an amp that old I'd be really concerned. I'm just sayin... YMMV:blah:
Moderators Kindness Posted January 18, 2009 Moderators Share Posted January 18, 2009 Different strokes and all, but if the transistors truly ARE hard to find these days, on an amp that old I'd be really concerned. That was my primary concern. I can repair a tube amp from that era, the solid state designs are obsolete by decades. There are a number of components in that amp that are likely to be well past their service life.
