Members rockguitar130
I currently have a 90w hartke combo amp and a new jbass. Im lookin to upgrade to a louder and higher quality sound so i can play some shows with my band. I have basically no knowledge of amp and speaker mechanics so i have some basic questions.... I've heard Avatar makes good bass cabs and was wondering, how their sound would match up to something like a markbass or ampeg? and.. If i was to buy a bass cab like:http://www.avatarspeakers.com/b212.htmorhttp://www.avatarspeakers.com/B410%20NEO.htm what wattage head would i need to buy for each to get the best out of it? thanks
Members AluminumNeck
Well it would best to try and buy a head that matchs the capcity. I prefer to have headroom power. I find most speaker can take more musical wattage then the rattings would suggest not to mention it is tough to get the maximum wattage ouf of a head in the first place. That being siad both of those cabs would like work well with a 500watt or so head. Really depends on how much you wish to spend. How much volume do you need ? What are you up against in your playing situation ?
Members nAmzrTakin
I'll need a budget first. Avatar are good for their price but there are better. How do you like the Harke? If you wanna stay with them I'd recommend HA3500 headXL115 & XL410 cabs If you have uber fundsMesa Mpulse 600 cabsMesa Powerhouse 115 & Mesa Powerhouse 410 cabs(LOL this is my dream rig)
Members bassman1956
The first is a 500W cab, the second a 1000W cab. Lost of room. Those are RMS. Either amp will work fine with only 10 or 20 watts, but what's the point? 200 watts gets you in the general accepted minimum power range, especially if it'sd an all-tuber amp. So, an amp that gets close to that 500, or 1000, but not over leaves your speakers protected. And if you go more amp for any reason, just remember you can't turn it up to 10's. Also, there's a lot of love for all the new Class D amps out there right now. Lots of choices! So, as nAmzrTakin said, what's your budget? FYI, I have a Traynor YBA200 on top a Mesa 115 + 210 set. I love it, others don't. But, it's very bassy, and bloody loud for 200 watts!
Members Roguetitan
biggest bang for the buck starting out if one is still available would be this little GK brat pack which is plenty loud enough to cut through the mix pretty well and you can add an extension cab as it is needed. very user friendly amp which you can also DI to the mixing console.for 300 bucks new or if money is not an option you may want togo with the Goldline series Or even better Mesa Engineering:thu: EDIT: MF has them in stock ready to ship for 300 bucks
Members rockguitar130
First off, im willing to spend around $1000, maybe more or less. Second I'm hoping this will last me awhile so i want a high quality brand. I'm not sure how to explain how much volume i'll need....i've seen other bands play at the places ill be playing and most of the bassists have a 4x10 cabinet and it seems to do fine (im unsure of the wattage though). So i generally want to match the amps wattage with the cab's wattage?and If i buy a higher wattage amp (500w) and i plug it into a 250w cab, i can just turn it to half volume and ill get better quality right? ty for responses so far. Members Rippin' Robin
$1k is a fine budget. If you get one of those Avatar cabs and a decent head (let's say, a Gallien-Krueger RB700 or something) you'll have a rig that'll last years
Members AluminumNeck
My suggestion would be to buy 2 300watt 4x10 cabs over one 1000w 4x10 cab. 2 4x10 cabs will be sunstantially louder even with the same 500 watts of power. Just some insite.

Members T. Alan Smith
With that budget, I'd look at a Schroeder sub compact 1x15" cab and a GK1001RB.
Members Bryan316
Not always.A single Eden XLT 4x10 will probably be louder than 2 Behringer 4x10 cabs. One Eden 410XLT is louder than Behringer's 810 cab. The store guys were SHOCKED when I proved this to them in the loud room.

That's sort of how it works....yeah. Until you start to drive your speaker harder than it can be driven that is... Your amp is less likely to go into clipping, so you get the "clean headroom" that way.
Members rpsands
At 1000 bucks... Save a couple more pennies, then order an Avatar 4x10 and a Gk 1001 RB II from RmcAudio.com (600 bucks, if you request a quote).

Members AluminumNeck
behringer cabs have a low efficiency with the bulgera speakers "if thats what they had" then the eden would so yes it would be louder for a given wattage. I was suggesting 2 good quality or decent quality 4x10 with respectable sensitivity vs going with one whopper or a 4x10 that uses some somewhat insensitive speakers. One Eden 410XLT is louder than Behringer's 810 cab. The store guys were SHOCKED when I proved this to them in the loud room.
