Members HackedByChinese!
Audacity is simple to use and doesn't do a lot beyond taking in sound. Reaper is a full-featured digital audio workstation. It's available as an evaluation copy and can be purchased for $50 if you like it.

Members C#minor
+1 for Reaper, you also may want to check energyXT from http://www.energy-xt.comIf you get any issue of Computer Music magazine, you'll find a very capable copy (not a demo) of energyXT2 onthe dvd. Members Westsailor
Krystal is a pretty cool free recording program. That it is. I keep trying others but come back to Kristal. Easy to use with a simple, elegant interface. http://www.kreatives.org/kristal/ If I weren't so used to Kristal I'd probably be using N-Track Studio. Not free ($64 and there is a demo version) but it's the only affordable recording S/W I've run across that let's you apply VST effects to a selection (vs the entire track). http://ntrack.com/index.php
