I'm curious about a Yamaha RBX4 A2

I am looking for a bass guitar and found this Yamaha to be priced really well. It's MSRP is about 850 but its list is nearly 600 and its on clearence for 250. I can't imagine why, the reviews say it was new in 2007. That seems like a really short run. I don't want a flop. My other choice for that price range is a Squier VM precision bass. I was actually hoping someone would have experience with the Yamaha and could say something about it. Thanks.

To No-Logic: thanks for the link it was what I was hoping for. I may very well get the bass. I'm pretty new to guitar but I think the bass might be more for me.

To Poltergeist: I'm not really looking for a specific tone. I would be using beginner books and would rather not have a total beginner bass like an Affinity. I don't have any problems with starter packs but I know from experience that if I buy a better bass now then I won't need to get one later. When I bought my Squier guitar starter pack I really almost bought a better guitar and a Frontman 10 and the other stuff to make learning work. And now I wish I had. Starter packs are good but just a little more money and there is an improvement in equipment and considering this bass is normally 550 and I can get it for 250, I think that untill I become good I wont need another bass. About tone I'm not sure how to respond but I like rock and metal and blues and alot of melodic stuff. I'm getting closer to ordering it as I write.

for melodic stuff the P is definitly not the way to go, though it is for blues, and can be for metal...

i'd say the best for what you want would be the Yamaha, for sure...

.... be sure to also check out the Squier VM Jazz basses, though, those are awesome for everything you want :thu:

So is this RBX4 A2 a precision or a jazz bass? As I was researching basses in general I noticed that jazz basses are narrower at the nut and therefore the strings are closer at the bridge (and j basses typically have two pickups, is that what makes this a jazz bass?). Just from research I think a p bass is my catagory however I must learn to actually be catagorized. What makes one bass better for metal than the other?

it's neither.

Precision and Jazz are formats of bass.

both Precision and the Jazz are good for metal, but the Precision is a bass that gives you loads of bass and low-mid fundamentals, while the Jazz will you will give you a punchier, more defined tone.

It's got single coils, but the pick up covers are different from the jazz. So it'll most likely sound like a jazz

I have one by the way, really nice basses

I feel that it's got more of an aggressive, more biting jazz tone. Not what I'd call a deep boomer, but brighter and sharper, and it sustains for days! ;)

I played a white/grey RBX4A2 4-string in a mall music store a couple of months back. My impression was that it looked a bit gimmicky, but played and sounded quite good. I also remember being impressed by the fretwork.

I think that's pretty accurate. Sounds like a good Jazz to me. Check out Ed Friedland's review:

I placed my order for the bass today and so it should arrive within 5 business days from when it leaves MF. They have never let me down with their shipping policy and now I'm thinking maybe I should've upgraded to get it sooner. Oh well.

I ordered some bass books from amazon.com and they have some "amazon prime" (I think it was called) thingy going, I try it free for a month and they upgraded me to two day shipping. Pretty cool for me. At least I'll have my books soon.

If you ordered the Yamaha you should really enjoy it for years to come! Not slamming the Squire as the only experience I have with Fender basses is with real Fender basses, just saying IMHO you got the better "bang for buck" bass! Enjoy!

I agree with that 100%

However I have had experience with both Squier and Yamaha and still play Yamaha instruments, although Squier are good instruments, IMHO the Yammy makes a higher quality instrument within or below the same price line as Squier instruments.

Yammy is definitely the BBFTB:thu:

OOOh I like that in white!!! I may have just found my next 4-banger!!!

Better act fast. They're out of production and the white ones are already pretty much sold out. A few online stores are clearing out the black ones at ridiculously low prices. Once those are gone, there won't be any more new ones on the market.

Well it is a low price but it's everywhere but your link. I've read where other posters got it for 250 and it's in several mailers that I've received. It was in the January catalog but it isn't in the February catalog from MF. I ordered it yesterday morning and they still haven't shipped it. I'm getting nervous. I'll call tomorrow, it's probably a slow computer at their end. I've received several packages from MF and never encountered this.
