I have a delicate problem. I am looking for a Jazzbass and i have narrowed it down to a Marcus Miller sig. or a Geddy Lee sig.

I have been a Rush fan for years and Geddy is one of my heroes. I am not so familiar with Marcus Millers music but i jut thinks his bass looks and sounds soo cool. I already have a passive Jazzbass but the Geddy sig. also sounds and looks great. Anyone of you fel low bassplayers that owns either a Miller or Geddy bass that can say what u think about them

I have a Marcus Miller and it plays great. The active set-up is very nice. Very heavey. Ash I think. The inlays are awsome.

I have played the Geddy a few times in different stores. Some better than others.

I like the neck on both. IMO they have a similar feel. The geddy may be a little thinner.

My other bass is a Jag. The CIJ Fender stuff is really nice

3 Things to consider:

1. Do you want active or passive. (The MM will do both)

2. You have to take the neck OFF the Geddy to do a set-up.

3. The Geddy has the sig discreetly on the back of the headstock. The Miller has it on the front.

WTF:confused:

The Geddy lee is one of the best playing bass guitars I have ever had the pleasure to play regardless of how plain looking it is.

Yeah, I've played probably half a dozen Geddys, and every one of them had a nice neck - straight, thin, and nice fret work...

The Geddy neck may not be for everyone; it's one of the thinnest front-to-back necks out there. I have really liked every Geddy I have played.

I would pick the Geddy, but then again, I would take any passive Fender over any active Fender. Strictly my opinion.

Watch out for weight; the Millers are notorious for being heavy, and some Geddys can be 10+ pounds.

All true, but I wouldn't describe ANY Geddy neck I've played as "awful" - although I'd also say that I've been able to get a decent to good sound out of any active Fender I've ever played - including the MIM Active Jazz Deluxe I traded away(that I miss)...

i agree the Geddy Lees are awesome. i didn't buy one because i have huge hands, and the neck is so fast and thin it wasnt very comfortable for me to play. and they also sounded amazing...

the Marcus Miller are really great, but i still think they're all they put 'em out to be.

the Geddy is a singular beast. if you've never played one, do so before buying one - the neck is a love/hate thing. i dunno about the weight, my Geddy wasn't that heavy.

every MM i've messed with is heavy, and i've never been satisfied with the tone. but everyone's ear i sdifferent.

that used one with the Fralins and the Sadowsky preamp sounds good. my Lull has Fralins and it sounds great. if you've already got a passive J, this may be the way to go.

good luck!

His Jazz is a 70's vintage and those 70's fenders are heavier than {censored}....

Ever played a 70's strat?

Talk about a boat anchor....

you'd think you strapped on a Les Paul or Explorer instead....

I much prefer the looks and feel of the MM bass. I love the ash body, neck pickup cover, and pearl blocks  As others have mentioned, the electronics are the weak point. MM's actual 1977 Jazz ("The Destroyer") bass has Sadowsky electronics. The stuff in the MM sig sounds pretty lousy in comparison.

The good news is that there's plenty of room under that HUGE pickguard. I'd pull out the stock electronics and either replace them with all passive (using the wiring kit from Mojo) or install a proper Sadowsky on-board pre. Or Bartolini, Aguilar, etc. Your choice.

Thanks guys. I have found a used Marcus Miller with Lindy Fralin Pickups and a Sadowske Preamp.

Get that and don't even think twice about it :thu:

Stock for stock, the Geddy Lee wins in terms of tone. But a MM with Fralins and a Sadowsky pre would absolutely slay.

They're both *very* different basses. If I were you, I'd find a way to try out both of them and buy the one that feels best in your hands. Who knows, you may even run across another bass that you like more than either one of those!

I'd get the Marcus. I bought one last year and love it. It comes down to what feels right in your hands, not who's music you like. I'm not a Marcus guy at all, but his sig bass is bad! The black inlays (paint?) on the Geddy look a little wanky to me, but the inlays on the marcus are gorgeous, as is the finish, neck, neck pocket.
