Members L-1329
So, I need some help. I'm so behind the times it's not even funny, but I have a chance to wire up a new house for cable/internet/other media, and need some good idea's. A friend suggested I wire up each room with ethernet cable (cat 5 wire) and go voip instead of regular telephone. I have only come up with just regular cable jacks, but I'm sure these days there are plenty of other options. So if you all could wire up your house any way you wanted to, what would you choose and why? I am clueless, help me! ps: it's already a given that I need to use all l_/\// cable, so no need to suggest that...
Members slapthefunkyfour
How much would it cost to also put an optical cable/jack in each room? I don't think it will be very far in the future when that will be the standard.
Members burdizzos
Standard CAT5 and Coax connections should be fine. Personally, I wouldn't worry with the CAT5, I'd just go wireless for broadband. It may be worth it to aks how much it would cost to run conduit from the Electrical/Cable/Comm entrance point to the major rooms of the house with pull lines for future updates. However, it seems that wireless tech is going to make the cables in houses obsolete for communication and entertainment. I just got Verizon FiOS and it came with a 6 hour UPS to back up my communication system.

Cables? Who uses cables?
Members L-1329
Ok so just coax for the tv's, and skip the rest? For going wireless, would I then need to run some cat 5 cable in the house to the router locations, or could they use regular coax? I told you I don't know squat... Members PaulyWally
That was my initial reaction. Cables? Who uses cables? Ummm... me??? I avoid wireless if I can. If it were me, I would run CAT6 8-pair plus a coax to each room...or at least the major rooms. 8-pair will take you a LONG way in terms of analog phone lines, digital phone, and ethernet. And I don't even think they make CAT5 anymore. It's CAT5e or CAT6 now. edit: Actually, it looks like CAT7 is out now. Either way, if you are going to wire it with twisted pair, it's wise to get the latest category available. BTW - I don't often suggest VOIP... or any phone system that requires a computer network. Analog phone is the shiznit. That's right. You heard it here. I've also been out of the loop in terms of cable/Satellite/etc. I would see what newer premium TV services are using (or looking to move toward) for cable hookup. I don't know if anyone's moving away from coax... or what the life-expectancy of it is at this point.
Members burdizzos
HDMI cables Probably a good idea to get the HDMI prewired in the wall where the big ass flat screen in the living room is going. Anywhere else, you can just run it from the box.
Members misterhinkydink
I'd string at least CAT6 if I were you. High bandwidth traffic such as video over wireless can be hit or miss.

I was wondering about this. Could I run the cable line into the house and make a J-box, where I send a Cat 6(?) cable to each room, as well as the coax cables for the TV's? I would like the option of a hard wired high speed in each room, and to be able to have each TV be able to watch cable independantly and simultaneously, and the same for the internet with multiple computers if possible...
