Members Flâneur
Or thereabouts. I was thinking Cort Artisan, maybe Ibanez, but I really don't know the market. What should I be trying? I like the tone on my 44-02, and if I could find similar, I'd be happy, but I think a 55-02 would be pricier. :randomsmiley:
Members jasper383
That is a tough price point for a fretless 5 string. I always suggest used. Ibanez Gary Willis used, or maybe the Yamaha TRB 1005F used.

Members Bryan316
Scour Craig's List, and go visit every store in town. Look for that one awesome deal hiding in the corner.
Members Frycook
Funny you mention this, I finally quit lurking in here and registered just to ask about a similar thing. I know my next bass is going to be a 5-string, I just want one, don't need it. I'm also about to head to GC and play with some fretless necks just to see what they are like. So I may get all wild and get a fretless 5-string, it could happen. I was looking at that Lace Helix. I found the 5-strings online for $699. I suddenly got the gas for it, can't decide which color but my opinion has changed from thinking it looked like something off the jetsons to something dead sexy. Anyone's thoughts on the helix? Or fretless vs fretted for a wannabe bass player? I have the epi bird and honestly I have a long ways before I will ever "outgrow" it, if ever. Members y-o-y
You might keep your eyes peeled for a used 55-01 (should be able to get one for 450-500). You could also buy something fretted and defretting?
Members Hopi
Once in awhile, a Schecter Studio 5 fretless will pop up on ebay for $600-700. Usually it'll be brand new and unplayed, but with a small ding or blemish.
Members bnyswonger
I sat in with a band that had the cort 5 string fretless and was mighty impressed with it, especially after I heard how affordable they are.
Members Poltergeist
how about getting a G&L Tribute and getting it defretted?
Members Flâneur
Yes, I defretted an old aria but I wasn't happy with the result. Maybe my handicraft skills.
Members bassman1956
I hear MTD Kingstons are available fretless. But I've never known of a real one.If they really did exist, it would be worth a trial.

Members Flâneur
my opinion has changed from thinking it looked like something off the jetsons to something dead sexy. Glad to see you out in the open. In my twisted world-view, these two are not mutually exclusive. I fear, though, that Lace basses are hard to come by in the old country. Judy Jetson was a little hottie, wasn't she? yah well I pased the gas, now I'm thinking of one of those Yamaha RBX things with the lights. I'll have two and I can defret one. Nothing really to lose. I tried some different things yesterday, I really think I do want a fretless, but I wasn't prepared for the 5-string neck on anything so I guess I'll stick with 4 Its not like I use more than one in a bar, 2 for a solo, LOL!
