Members TopFlightBass
So I need some advice on what type of amp to get. I have an active 5 string. I really want something that handles the low B well. I hate nothing more than a farty B string. I also want something that is good and clear. Something that will not just make my notes really boomy if it is loud. I guess I mean something that will allow you to actually hear the bass line well. I own a peavy rig right now with a 1x15 and 2x10. It is alright, but I really want an upgrade. I would like something along the lines of a head + 4x10 half stack. Not interested in a combo. I play in a pretty good size room, but It is not an environment where I want to over power the other band members or anything. Just something that sounds good. I have been looking at the ampeg 410HLF and the GK 410 rbh. as far as head I have looked at most of the RB gk stuff and an svt 3. Let me know what you think. Main points are that I want it clear at maybe half volumes, and handles the B well. Thanks.
Members Poltergeist
i play an 1001RBII and many people here do. its one of those tried-and-true amps, theyre amazing, pack alot of tone and volume and punch... i think that for what you want the RB is perfect. its the amp ive played and is clearer at higher volumes, bar none. warm but very very clear and balanced troughout the whole sound spectrum. the RBH cabs are awesome. what kinda tone are you aiming for? Members TopFlightBass
That is very helpful. I have heard really good stuff about the 1001. And they seem relatively inexpensive for what you get. I play at my church, but we also play other place. We are playing a large conference in the summer with 5 -7 thousand people there. I really dig the guy from hillsong united tone. If can't pin point a specific tone I'm after. I am in one of those phases where I am not sure what I want. I don't mind some warm sounds. I know I won't get a tube sound out of a SS amp.
Members Poltergeist
the GK has a tube emulating system, which gives it what we call around here the "GK growl", which is sort of a tube-like growl, but not quite... it is a very very loud amp, even for 700W, i'm sure you can cover most gigs with it. you can get 'em on rmcaudio.com for around 600$. i won't recommend Ampeg because it's something i'd only play if i had to... ... if you're going for Ampeg, try and find some vintage stuff, the new stuff is mostly purely undefined mud low-rumbling bass, imo ... although their "new" 6x10's are quite nice. Members TopFlightBass
Thanks. I've been thinking GK for a while. this is confirmation.
Members Poltergeist
dont take only my word for it, wait for some replies from other users, they might suggest different stuff, you know... this is just my opinion. this is what i usually recommend, because its what i chose to use, and because it is a very reliable amp, with a great characteristic tone, great volume, though it has quite simple features its quite a bit versatyle, and it fits well in every style of music/playing i can think of. when i bought it i had enough money to pick mostly amp i wanted, and i went for GK. Members Emprov
Take your bass down to a shop and try it though as many rigs as you can. That'd be a good start.

That'd be a good start. +1 I don't currently own a 5-string, but I've played them in the past, and I always felt my Avatar B410 NEO handled the low-B pretty well without sounding boomy. I also installed casters, which helps keep it from sounding boomy, and I used an Auralex Gramma in the past as well. As for amps, I'll just say I'm loving my Peavey Pro Bass 500 so far, and I got a great deal on it. Very versatile EQ section, and you can dial in any amount of tube overdrive you want with the 'Pre Gain' control.
Members SunofNothing
the Mark Bass 4x10 handles 5 very well. For a newer company, i'm very impressed.
