Members ErnieManz13
Im looking for a bass that cuts throught the mix well. I hate going to concerts and the bass completely getting lost. I play bass basically like a second guitarist at times and use plenty of effects. Im just looking for something with a unique sound that cuts through all the {censored}. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.
Members 82Daion
As far as stuff that's readily available goes, I'd recommend a Music Man Stingray.

Members Mytola
G&L L2000/L2500 if you want a fiver. Alternatively, you could get a Tribute-model of either of those for around $400 used, $700 new.

Members Brother Mango
The way this puzzle is described, I don't think the attention should be on the bass. You're probably just trying to wrap your mind around the myriad of basses, and the wide range of prices on the market. And maybe you're nervous about buying a bass and finding that you don't like it. You've got to just jump in. Go buy a bass that feels good, looks good and sounds good to you. You might want something differnt later, and you might not. You won't know until you jump into the game. Getting lost in the mix is a whole different issue.
Members Tolka
You could also check out Bacchus basses. http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=m37.l1313&satitle=bacchus+bass&category0=
Members Poltergeist
a used Rickenbacker would be great......... .... but you already have a Musicman, and i can't think of many things better then that for what you described. with the bass and rig you have you'll only get lost in the mix if there's a huge douchebag behind the mixing board or if you're not EQing it right to a live situation. Members DevilRaysFan
Nothing cuts through a mix better than a G&L ASAT or L-2000/2500 IMHO. Presence like no other... Stingray would be the next choice afterward for me
Members Jazz Ad
Guitar oriented and cutting through well, stay the hell away from Fender. With your budget, I'd recommend a Ric. If you want something more modern, try an used Status or Vigier.

Agreed...if a Sterling isn't being heard, this sounds like a {censored}ty mix issue. 3 possibilities:1) you have a bad soundman/men2) you're not communicating adequately with said soundman3) you're being intentionally mixed down

The key is to make sure your mids are coming through your amp. Not all sound men or all house systems are going to help you in this endeavor. Effects can make your goal difficult also. Members Super Bass
You need an Aria Pro II SB. Cuts through - Check (see Duran Duran) Works well with effects - Check (see early Metallica) Looks unique - Check

Members s4001
Buy a Ric. Kidding aside, play a bunch and buy what speaks to you. Getting thru the mix has more to do with the way you play and eq your instrument. Mccaa gets thru with a Hofner as well as Geddy with a Ric. The one time I was lost in the mix, it was my weak bass amp and a super loud band. I'd rather have a bass I'm comfortable playing, and the cut-through factor will come from somewhere else. Members Brother Mango
Thunderbroom doesn't seem to have problems cutting through with his duct tape bass. This ain't about basses.
Members Poltergeist
check his avatar, he's playing a GK1001RB to a 412 Neo cabinet. that cuts through like Chuck Norris' fist through a man's chest and has a {censored}load of volume. ... so, that's not the problem. Members Mytola
You're right about that. That amp+cab+bass-combination the OP's got should cut through pretty much everything.
Members Poltergeist
problem is definitly not his gear then, i think we all agree... ... his problem is probably what is or has been the problem of all of us at one point... {censored}ty soundmans... ... i think there should be, not "sound man" in the bands, but there should be a "music man" (and i'm not refering to the basses ).... the thing is... i've been to alot of shows, and i can say that in 95% of the time, at least, what came of of the speakers was sound. music? {censored} no. there should always be someone up there making sure it was music. i know that if i get involved in a good project again, i'll have to have someone to occupy that position. Members Crescent Seven
You're right about that. That amp+cab+bass-combination the OP's got should cut through pretty much everything. I'm guessing the "second guitarist" thing means he distorts the {censored} out of his signal, and probably scoops a little bit. Every time I step on a distortion pedal, it's like I don't even exist, I might as well set my bass down and go grab a beer.C7
Members Mytola
Yeah, I'd bet the problem is the effects and probably the EQ'ing as well.
