Im looking for a bass that cuts throught the mix well. I hate going to concerts and the bass completely getting lost. I play bass basically like a second guitarist at times and use plenty of effects. Im just looking for something with a unique sound that cuts through all the {censored}. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

The way this puzzle is described, I don't think the attention should be on the bass.

You're probably just trying to wrap your mind around the myriad of basses, and the wide range of prices on the market. And maybe you're nervous about buying a bass and finding that you don't like it.

You've got to just jump in. Go buy a bass that feels good, looks good and sounds good to you. You might want something differnt later, and you might not. You won't know until you jump into the game.

Getting lost in the mix is a whole different issue.

a used Rickenbacker would be great.........

.... but you already have a Musicman, and i can't think of many things better then that for what you described. with the bass and rig you have you'll only get lost in the mix if there's a huge douchebag behind the mixing board or if you're not EQing it right to a live situation.

Agreed...if a Sterling isn't being heard, this sounds like a {censored}ty mix issue. 3 possibilities:

1) you have a bad soundman/men

2) you're not communicating adequately with said soundman

3) you're being intentionally mixed down

I agree with this.

You should be able to cut through with just about any bass. The key is to make sure your mids are coming through your amp. Not all sound men or all house systems are going to help you in this endeavor. Effects can make your goal difficult also.

4)the rest of the band is playing louder than the capabilities of the bass players amp to be able to cut through the mix.

any bass will cut through the mix as long as your amp is adequate could be that you need to focus more on an amp:idk:

what kind of amp are you playing through and how many watts?

The one time I was lost in the mix, it was my weak bass amp and a super loud band.

I'd rather have a bass I'm comfortable playing, and the cut-through factor will come from somewhere else.

problem is definitly not his gear then, i think we all agree...

... his problem is probably what is or has been the problem of all of us at one point... {censored}ty soundmans...

... i think there should be, not "sound man" in the bands, but there should be a "music man" (and i'm not refering to the basses :D).... the thing is... i've been to alot of shows, and i can say that in 95% of the time, at least, what came of of the speakers was sound. music? {censored} no. there should always be someone up there making sure it was music. i know that if i get involved in a good project again, i'll have to have someone to occupy that position.

You're right about that. That amp+cab+bass-combination the OP's got should cut through pretty much everything.

I'm guessing the "second guitarist" thing means he distorts the {censored} out of his signal, and probably scoops a little bit.

Every time I step on a distortion pedal, it's like I don't even exist, I might as well set my bass down and go grab a beer.
