Members bbl
I need a new laptop for recording. PC, I think. Anything I should look out for? I'm a noob when it comes to computers. I just want something fast, stable and reliable. Thanks.

Members RSBro
I'm looking too. I may just nab my brother's like-new XP machine he has barely used the last 2 years b/c he had so much junk and spy/freeware on it. He got a new Vista laptop for Christmas, so he doesn't really need it...
Members Jugghaid
Be wary of laptops with after market sound cards. There may be some compatibility issues with whatever software program you decide on so do your homework. From the standpoint of a good laptop, I have a Sony Vaio that I bought about 3 years ago that I have had absolutely zero issues with. Great machine and it runs Protools perfectly. Members catphish
I'll be looking in a few months for school. I used to be able to write notes wicked fast in school. Not any more.
Members Super Bass
Thinkpad X or T series. I have a T400, it's a nice laptop but it has a Ricoh firewire chipset. I only discovered after buying it that those are useless with most firewire audio interfaces. If you get a laptop and need firewire, make sure it has a Texas Instruments chipset. Members FreestyleIntruder
If it's specifically for audio I'd recommend the Mac route.

Members FreestyleIntruder
LOL! I'm not a Mac evangelist, it's just when I was thinking of getting a laptop for audio recording, the more I looked into it the more it seemed that the Mac was just a better machine for that particular job. Hence why I ended up with one. Mainly due to the FW chipset issues mentioned earlier, but there were one or two other things.
Members Jugghaid
If it's specifically for audio I'd recommend the Mac route. I wouldn't only because of the price of a nice Mac compared to a comparable PC in performance. I really like Macs but they are overpriced as hell. Members bbl
I might consider a Mac. Are they more... simple?

I really like Macs but they are overpriced as hell. Well there is that...I was fortunate because I got an HE discount on mine which ended up saving me about 15%. OTOH this thing does seem like it should last a bit longer than a lot of PC laptops (although having said that my dad's old VAIO is still going strong after about 10 years) I suppose if the OP isn't planning on recording a lot of channels simultaneously then the FW thing won't be such an issue as he can just use a USB2 interface

Members rpsands
gotapex.com - wait for a nice HP deal. there should be a bunch out right now. Buy Intel processors, vista home premium, and don't buy any addons unless you really really can't go get them from Fry's. The additional warranties are sometimes nice, but usually a waste of money. Actually, HP are one of the few manufacturers that will NEVER EVER see another dime of my money. They don't stand behind their product worth a {censored} IME and their customer service is second to ALL.
Members xbassman
Yesterday I bought a Dell "studio" 1525. for $699.They've got 'em cheaper, but I wanted a Core2 machine. It came with 3GB ram and a 320GB HD (i think). The current deal was a $230 discount.

Not bad. I got a Dell Vostro 220 s Core 2 duo with 3GB of ram and only a 160GB drive IIRC (I didn't care as I have all my protools files on an external HD to protect them) for under $300 about 6 months ago off ebay. It was overstock due to having XP still. Box only, but a great deal and a nice computre.

Members Chlo_treacher
i agree man, go with a macbook-ive got one of the new ones. it doesnt get virus', its so easy to use, they look great-they are expensive but also if you think about how long it lasts, macbooks are just generally better. We use them at my university with logic. all the teachers say that they have both macs and pc laptops and that the macbooks outrun the pc's tenfold. plus they have so many funky little things to play with!! but yeah after that long ramble..i say macbook! Chlo x p.s is it general or are you a student? because students get a pretty good deal on them too...

Chlo x p.s is it general or are you a student? because students get a pretty good deal on them too... (bump) I pretty much just want my machine for a DAW and running itunes. I know Macs are more expensive and not necessarily worth the extra $, but I really need the most simple DAW I can find. I had an HP and I had a lot of problems setting up a firebox AND a Tascam FireOne. It didn't work. Latency issues up the wazoo. I've learned that I have very little patience for computer issues - they drive me batty and any musical ideas I had disappear whenever something doesn't go smooth 100%. I dunno, maybe I should get a stand-alone unit like a Tascam Digital Portastudio and be done with it. The interface is similar to the old 4-track, and I could use someone else's machine to run itunes. I've been "trying" to get a DAW set up for 3 years now. There always seems to be an unanticipated issue and then I just give up for a while. It shouldn't be this freakin' hard. Very frustrating. Help.
