EPI Jack Cassidy bass

I was watching PBS the other night and this older lady was singing with a bluesy/jazzy band and her bassplayer was playing a Jack Cassidy. Normally it's difficult to hear the bassplayer on these TV shows but I gotta tell you, the tone this guy was getting with his bass was beautiful, almost like an upright sound with a slightly warm burliness to it. Anybody have one? I'm just guessing but it sounded like he was playing thru an Ampeg, like a B15 sound. I don't know because I couldn't see the amp. The description for the bass says the key is it's strategically placed "low impedance" pickup, a sound in which high impedance pu's can't reproduce. Is there any truth to this statement? Of course it's also a semi-hollow bass, which I'm sure adds an upright quality to it. If I had a bunch of money I would definitely add one of these to my arsenal.

Got one. Love it. Scrape up $700 and get one for yourself.

If you do, though, you'll want to add an aftermarket extender bar to the bridge...makes them sound even better.

Thumper has one too.

I like the look of them a lot, I wanna try one out some time.

Yep. It's a nice bass. The Varitone impedance selector goes from traditional P-bass tones (50K) to growl (250K) to a very aggressive tone (500K). the 50K tone works best for me in my geezer/Classic Rawk band. :rawk:

Pro: Great tone, light weight, big fat comfy neck (this sucker could do nine innings at Shea Stadium), vintage mojo groove.

Con: Big hollow body might be uncomfortable for some players, sh*tty three-point POS Gibson bridge, high-gloss burgundy neck finish is a bit too shiny.

There are some helpful comments here

I played mine with Chromes on the 50K setting in a guitar/bass/trumpet trio and it quickly became the only bass those guys wanted to hear!

I no longer play with them, so the bass has been "on extended loan" for the last eight months to a percussion instructor who plays it with students to teach them to groove, (along with my Acoustic B20!!)... Kind of wish I had a current act where this would fit... I miss it!!

The pickup is magic, but the electronics can be problematic. I have not had issues, (other than a crackly pot that cleaned up nicely with contact cleaner), but know of one guy locally and have read of a few folks who had to replace the transformer for the VariTone switch. This may have been related to an early batch, as I haven't seen anything recently... I would look for this in a used instrument, but would be confident buying new.
