CL Listing Rant!!!

I completely understand. I placed a bass on CL in late November and received a deluge of scam mail. I answered each one of them with a simple "scammer" for a reply. They stopped. I listed a Fender American Deluxe Jazz V just this week and immediately got a scammer. Same reply, no more scam mails. It's a pain in the butt! Now, does anyone want to buy my bass?

What are the specs on the bass and what are you asking for it?

I'm considering a Marcus Miller or 75 RI at the moment.

It's a 1997 Fender American Deluxe Jazz V in blueburst and a mother of pearl guard. Orignal case with the candy. All are in VG+ condition. I'm the original owner, Bass is in great shape to have been gigged for twelve years by an adult.

First email is generally generic, so tough to know. Things like "I'm highly interested. More details please." You reply and they quickly reply with "I'm in India (or some other place), blah blah blah, will wire you money, Uhaul truck will come by to get the item, blah blah blah.

Another way to tell is that the name and email don't even correlate, e.g. Mary Smith with wasim.nebus@gmail.com. Many times the grammar is poor.

How can you tell if they're scammers? I'm putting stuff up there and have never really done so before, so I'm not sure what to look for.

The dead giveaway to me are these things:

The writer uses the word "item" a lot - not "guitar" "bass" or other specific term, but "item."

I've never had one where they request more information about the "item." They simply say they want it, and outline their terms and ask you to reply with a check mailing address or some other sort of action to get the payment going.

As chubrocker said, they mention someone picking up the item - usually a "friend in the area," a "business associate" or something like that.

As previously mentioned, the grammar is off. I've had e-mails that weren't horrible, but just off.

This has been my experience with the scam e-mailers. As far as the buyer saying they're from another country, more often, I've seen them say they're in another state or actually a U.S. resident who is out of the country, but they still want the item.

Ah-ha. I got one of those yesterday about my Taylor. "I'm in Staten Island", he said. "I have a friend who works at the Guitar Center in Natick". I sent him an email back saying "If you're in Staten Island, why don't you check with Mandolin Brothers", and I'm thinking "They're only one of the largest acoustic guitar dealers in North America, I'm sure they could get you a Taylor 314". He responds: "All their Taylors have electronics in them".

That all struck me as odd.

But you know, you never know. Maybe it's not a scam.

I'm meeting up with someone local today, so we'll see what happens there.

Thanks for the advice.
