Members Apendecto
The band I'm in...cough cough http://www.myspace.com/theroyalemotif cough... is playing a battle of the bands. Now everyone knows these things aren't really a competition but just a way for the bar or the promoter to make money. We didn't have to pay to get in, why anyone would do that I don't know, so it's just another gig-why not? We were contacted to play and so was everyone else. I'm not saying we are better than any of them but look at some of these bands. Why would you have 2 metal bands play with 2 rap groups and Nickleback wannabees? Wouldn't you try to get the same kinds of music? I guess they are getting their money either way... http://www.myspace.com/therealsirkishttp://www.myspace.com/xxhollowpointxxhttp://www.myspace.com/aeroplayne http://www.myspace.com/katalystmetalhttp://www.myspace.com/introvert00http://www.myspace.com/playthingrock Wow. Members stevesherbert
the last battle of the bands i played at was a KILLER show. probably 200+ people, and all you can drink (during the show) for 10 bucks! if your time slot is determined by how many tickets you sell, i'd be much less optimistic. i don't see a problem with mixing types of bands. i love hardcore punk, but more than 2 punk bands in a row makes me want to leave. i don't like the competition aspect of these types of shows at all. i do enjoy making fun of the dudes who are super serious all GO TEAM about it. better to use it as an opportunity to make new fans and network with the other bands who get it than to try to 'prove' that you're the best. All the battle of the bands around here are essentially pay-to-play shows. They give you 20 minute time slots, and they make you sell tickets for $10 each, then give them all the money. The "winner" is the band that sells the most tickets. You could get up there and yodel with a cowbell in your hand; if you sell the most tickets, you win. They slam 12 bands on the bill, and each band's fans leave immediately after their set. They are a rip-off to the bands AND their fans. Everyone I know that's played on has had gear come up missing, too, because you have 12 bands cramming all their gear into a tiny little space, and {censored} gets mixed up or stolen. If I join a band and they start talking about wanting to play one of those things, I'll quit immediately. I {censored}ING HATE those promoters and wish the venues weren't so greedy to keep using them.C7

Beyond that, the 'finals' never appear, and the fantastic prize promised never sees the light of day. It's a scam most nigerians would cream themselves over. It never ended, they stopped advertising the fact it was a contest and pushed that it was "indie night."

Doesn't matter if you win the first and second rounds, there's always going to be a new set of semi finals. "well, now you're the winners of semi-finals A, which will get you into the finals with the winners of semi-finals B and C' which magically turns into semi-finals D and C, meanwhile the booking company's making money hand over foot and never has to pay out. Members stevesherbert
the first battle of the bands i played at years ago wasn't too bad, either. we sold a bunch of tickets (by no means the most) and won something like 15 hours of studio time. i agree, though, MOST of these are scams. if the winner or time slots are determined by ticket sales or if there's more than 4 or 5 bands per night, i'd definitely pass. Members thelurker
I'm a little surprised to say that we did enter a Battle of the Bands, we did make it to the final, and we did get a cash prize ($500). The cheat in this one was that the owner carried a band into the final (one he wanted to win), to the point that even thought they'd finished second in two previous rounds, they somehow made the final. As it turned out, we and one other band brought in so many people that even adding judges couldn't put his chosen band over the top. We finished 2nd in votes, but bumped to third by "judges", and a Christian band won 1st! At the time, Christian rock was just getting started, and it was unheard of for this particular venue. The kicker? This was the same venue where Dimebag was shot. P.S. - MrMatt had at least attended a few of the shows for this BOTB. He should tell you about the punk band with the eggs.
