Audere or Bartolini pre-amp

Might try L-1327. Of course, he might be flying right now. But... I am pretty sure his LeComptes have Auderes. Auderes are a filter style preamp, rather than a band cut-n-boost style. They're totally different than the Barts, which are pretty much a straight 3-band preamp, with a 3-position mid center frequency switch. I've played both his LeComptes, but don't feel I remember enough detail to comment, other than their tones kicked mucho assimo. If he doesn't post here by tomorrow, send him a PM, I'm sure he'd be pleased to share.

I can comment on the Barts vs. Aggie OB#'s. To MY ears, Barts are a bit deeper sounding, smoother, and not quite as distinct. Aggies are a bit more neutral, and sharper or clearer sounding, and may be fair to describe as a more modern sounding. Both of my JD's have the Aggies. My Tobias has a Bart, and I've played several other bassess with them in. Combined with Bart pups, you get the deep classical "Bart Tone".

The bass has a j-pup in the neck and a music man 2 the bridge...looking for classic R&B tone....

Then trade the bass for a real Jazz.

FWIW, you're bitching in your other thread about no replies here, but your initial post has no information whatsoever. The world doesn't know that a "B5" is a Carvin, and you didn't provide any other hints as to what might appeal to you.

On to the topic: Even having given some pertinent details, asking for subjective advice in a forum is going to get you subjective answers. Your idea of "R&B" tone will likely differ from everyone else's, so wouldn't it be better to seek out someone who has these preamps installed in basses so you can try them yourself? Yeah it's a tough thing to find, but either way, you'll be the one road-testing the choice you finally do make. Hopefully you'll either choose lucky, or be able to return your mistake if you choose poorly. I know, it's not the advice you wanted, but it's possibly the most realistic. Either way good luck, and post up some boobies in your other thread.

I posted a thread with clips of my Jazz last year... can't find the link though :(

I have Delano J pickups with the Audere JZ3 and Tapewound strings... very oldschool tone. I can post up the clips again later if you want to hear it, they're nothing special musically but they show off the Z-modes nicely. :)

Delano's are pretty impressive.

I haven't gotten a chance to try L-1329's bass with the Audere pre. I played it with the Aggie pre and absolutely LOVED it tho.

You did actually, the fretless has the Audere and the fretted has the Aggie. Both sure sounded good through your rig too.

OP- as far as quality the Audere and Bart pre's are both excellent, I have three basses with the Bart three band and two with the Audere three band Z mode pre's. Tone aside, the biggest differences is that the Audere has an extra step with installation. The pickup magnets need to be grounded, so if your pickups don't have one, you need to add a grounding strip to the pole pieces of the pickups, which get wired into the preamp. It's not a hard thing to do, and the Audere website has tons of info and David is great for product support and helping you get it set up.

The Audere pre module is much smaller that the two modules of the Bart preamp, if space is a factor. The Audere will come all prewired with very nice pots and switches, the Bart doesn't and you will need to buy them seperately or in a packaged deal like from BestBassGear.com. The Audere is less noisy than the Bart to my ears if it's wired up correctly, but the Bart is not a noisy pre either.

I don't know what you really want for tone, or what your bass' natural tone is so I can't say which, if any, would be the best choice for you. They both do a great job for me in their respective basses, and I wouldn't change either one out in any bass. The quality is good, the potential for improved tone is there, but that depends on exactly what your bass is lacking and what you are expecting.
