Members BottomHeavyKate
So the b/f and I have put away our fare share of Jack Daniels and we're looking to try some new brands. So far we really like Maker's Mark. I dig Knob Creek (I can't remember if he liked it ) Any good suggestions? I'm looking to keep it under $40 a bottle.... Edit: okay since I'm a noob - I'm looking for either Scotch or Bourbon suggestions I didn't realize the spelling difference

Members basshunter
The Balvenie. Great single malt, the younger bottlings can be had for right around your $40 price point. Ditto The Macallan. (ri)1 is a new small batch rye whisky from the Beam family (like Knob Creek), excellent. You might also find Baker's bourbon at around the $40 mark, as well as Basil Hayden's. Again, all part of the Beam family small batch stuff.
Members bluedogaudio
I really liked Tullamore Dew Irish Whiskey. +100 A friend of mine turned me onto this stuff last Winter. Smooth and cheap.
Members King Kashue
If you're starting from Jack (pun intended), you've got lots of room to rise Single Malt Scotch: Islay Malts (Crazy peaty): Lagavulin (probably about $20 more than your $40 but worth it), Laphroiag, Bowmore, Ardbeg. Highland Malts: Ardmore, Dalmore, Glenmorangie Speyside: The Macallan (overpriced, but great, for $40 you're gonna get their youngest), Cardhu, Glenfiddich Also Talisker (from Skye) As for blends, The Famous Grouse is the most popular blend in Scotland. Irish: Bushmills 10 year old is like butter Jameson is nice as well (single-distillery, not single malt). My favorite for subtle sipping is the Bushmills, it's soooooo smooth. For a whisky "experience" it's Lagavulin, peaty for miles (Laphroiag is a close second).
Members MrJoshua
I see KK mentioned Glenfiddich, but I'm honestly pretty underwhelmed by it. I picked up a bottle of their 18-year and it's a very rough scotch. I don't drink a lot, so I try to keep a bottle of something good around for those rare moments when I want a bit. This is the first scotch I've ever felt like I needed to mix with Coke to make it drinkable.
Members Goofball Jones
Knob Creek. Yes, it's bourbon, but that's a form of whiskey. And I see you already mentioned it....well, it's still one of the best in my book.
Members Jugghaid
The Balvenie. Great single malt, the younger bottlings can be had for right around your $40 price point. Ditto The Macallan.. Absolutely.
Members Zon5string
Since you spelled it "whisky", that can only mean Scotch. I recommend The Glenlivet 12 year or Lismore (a bargain). If you really meant Bourbon, then I'd recommend Elijah Craig. You said under $40, so go for the 12 year, not the 18. And every time I talk about whisk(e)y, I remember this joke: I like my whisky like I like my women: 18 years old and mixed with coke.
Members BottomHeavyKate
Knob Creek. Yes, it's bourbon, but that's a form of whiskey. Members King Kashue
I see KK mentioned Glenfiddich, but I'm honestly pretty underwhelmed by it. Unfortunately, the Speysides get overpriced, and the Glenfiddich is one of the cheaper for that profile. It's not one of my favorites, but I generally don't buy my favorite Speysides, since they're often over $100...I just didn't want to list those, since that's not what she's looking for... Anyhoo, I generally prefer an Islay to any Speyside, so Lagavulin at $60ish per bottle for the 16 year old is great. (There's a reason it wins so many darn awards )
Members lokidecat
I came here to see if any elitists brought up the "whiskey" vs "whisky" debate. Anyways. I'm a fan of Bulleit Bourbon, and Pendleton Whiskey.

Members LanEvo
Among the affordable, easy-to-find single malts, it's tough to go wrong with Balvenie or Glenmorangie.
Members sludgebass69
I'm a fan of Canadian Whiskey myself, Crown Royal and the like, but my poor ass usually goes for Black Velvet. Damn good for the cheap stuff ($16 for a handle usually) and just fine for mixing.
