Members Ender_rpm
Moving soon and looks like FIOS will be an option. I have cable, have for years, and have been fine with it. Any specific benefits or drawbacks to the service? Is it in fact faster? How reliable has your service been? How do power outages, etc effect it? Thanks! Members miles to go
I've had Fios for the last 2 1/2 years and have been pretty happy with it. I just went with the slowest/cheapest level, because I don't really need super high bandwidth. It's been pretty reliable, except when I put a post-hole digger through the fiber line. Verizon customer support leaves a bit to be desired, but that's probably true of must providers.
Members Chaos5522
Well i just got FIOS here...reliability of service is going to to depend on how long they've had the infrastructure in place to work the kinks out of it...A buddy of mine had it out in the suburbs before it came into the city and for the first couple of weeks it was problematic. Since then, they've had almost no problems with it. As far as power outages are concerned, each FIOS installation comes with an 8 hour battery, so if you have your phone service over the FIOS, you can still use the line after the power goes out. Just keep in mind that you'll need a wired telephone for this to be of any use because the base of any cordless unit is going to be useless without power. So far my only issue with FIOS is that the router they supply is basicly crap, and is in no way capable of handling the 9 computers on my network. The good news is that any other router will suffice. It isn't like DSL where the router needs to store your username and password. Once they activate the FIOS, your router will get its IP directly from the upstream router. The only reason to keep the Verizon-supplied router around is because you can use it connect a TV if you have the TV over FIOS bundle, and even that's not really critical because there's a connection for that on the fiber termination box. Members groutt
Verizon customer service system SUCKS. I've never had an automated system connect me to a number "that is disconnected or is no longer in service" before. Verizon: Good People, Bad System. My phone and internet were down once in a year, so that's not too bad. It took me an hour of being jerked around before someone figured out it was "mumble mumble mumble at the central office maybe". And the first time they set me up for the install they were a no-show and there was no record of my order. The second time a guy actually showed up and did a very good job. My in-laws just got it and the install guy was newbie subcontractor that did a crappy job. I now hate Verizon and don't want anything to do with them ever again. (Unless they will cut me a good enough deal on adding TV, then I'll do that. )
Members y-o-y
I went all in (TV, ISP, Phone) 18 months ago and I have been thrilled with it. In that time I have had 1 minor service outage which was resolved quickly. I signed on for 2 years at an initial rate that is really low, but I am concerned about the rate jump when that two year term expires. I dealt with customer service (technical support) once and didn't have any troubles getting connected to a person or getting my issue resolved.
