Members blueyedmule
I've got a budget of $600--not me actually but a friend of mine. He's looking for a used or new laptop for work use: accounting and such. No interest in gaming. Downloading music is good and downloading photos. So we're not talking about working with graphics, etc. Just a good, basic laptop. What would you suggest?
Members Flâneur
Dell. Safe (if boring) choice in my experience. Now seeing the fifth I've used or recommended. Have yet to see one break.

Members blueyedmule
I assume I'm not allowed to say keep your eyes open for a refurbed macbook? Dunno why not. We looked at second-hand Macs and found them cost-prohibitive though. What was in his price point was laptops with USB 1.1 which wouldn't be a good idea, what with USB 3 coming around the corner. So far all I've seen that has made sense has been PC laptops. We did check out the Dell website, found some that looked promising. Hell, they're more juiced-up than this old Sawtooth 400 I'm running! Members ec437
Fair enough. For what he would use it for he'd be plenty happy with a mac is why I suggested it. If you stay on the lookout, though, you might be able to find one that would be in his price range.

I was originally going to put him in an older Mac tower for well under what he's spending on the laptop, but due to space crunch in his tiny house da wife said "laptop only" so that's where he's at. We'll definitely keep an eye out for Macs, I'm a Mac guy. I've got my snobbish Apple sticker on my $500 '92 Dodge Spirit (with power locks and power windows I'll have you know) proclaiming my cultural elitism.
