I hopefully won't be building another PC for a while. My gaming machine is a Core2Quad Q6600 with AMD HD4700 video card, so it ought to last a while longer. And I just built a quad-core Mac clone that will be the new studio computer after I move into the new building (might be, anyway - I'm going to try it out). I'm not going to move to the new computer until I put up the new building, though.

ive built enough PCs in my day and this has solved multiple issues for me. orange mohawk mileage may vary.

Depending on the device, I might agree with you... But with core PC parts, I'd say refrain from flashing the mobo, video cards, etc. unless there's a real reason to. IE unsupported hardware, instability issues, etc. Routers and whatnot, yeah, flash to your hearts content.

Far too many issues can arise from flashing gone wrong for me to openly recommend it to someone whose experience I am unaware of, or as a first resort regardless of problem.

BUT, that is just me.

id rather have the latest release of the bios on the motherboard than who knows what version depending on how long its sat in a warehouse. i was about ready to smash my dvd burner before i flashed the firmware and bang, back to working like a charm.

The firmware on your burner, or mobo? Again, a burner is one of those things where I'd say have at it. Both of my media drives are flashed. :thu:

firmware on burner, bios on mobo.

another one i did recently was a software update on my wii. the other day i finally got around to adding its mac to my allow list on my wireless router and the first thing it wanted to do once i configured the wireless was update. the combo of my wireless internet, low speed dsl and peak hour utilization had that sucker d/ling that update for like 10 minutes. all while "do not power system off" message flashed on the screen. i was happy when that sucker finished.

I guess maybe I should clarify my statement and say "be careful with motherboard bios flashes". Wii/xbox updates aren't a big deal and are protected from screw up.

Copycat.

My case is similar but a bit bigger methinks:

Yay for mid-tower cases nearly the size of a full-tower, with enough airflow to make some noise. 7 120mm fans and a 92mm CPU cooler (with a copper and fin cooler) makes for a COOL computer...not to mention I've even got a HDD cooler too...mmm.

I'm still an XP Pro kind of guy. Stable and happy for me.

I've yet to hear a single bad thing about Windows 7, and it's still in Beta. Good sign :thu:

I will be installing and using it on my main box here at work as soon as one of the users is done using it as a testbed

After Windows 7 releases, if I hear good things, and it runs graphically as well as Vista (IE: allows 1080p resolution with a supported card) I'll be switching so I can do Blu-Ray. No reason to put a perfectly good 23" Samsung 1080p monitor to waste!

Here's one bad thing - It's got an OS X like "dock".

:D

Building PCs is fun :thu:
