scared away from schecters

I know some of you have had great luck with schecters. I know failboat has a nice stiletto, and georgestrings has a really nice hellraiser. and I've never heard anything bad about them, but I'm wondering about the new ones, or at least the ones GC gets.

My c-4 had a bad pre-amp, well, schecter told me that it was the stores responsibility since the bass was still new... that if I wanted anything done, I had to go back to the store. On top of that, two of my bridge pieces (s-tek bridge) were lifting off the body, and the screws were stripped.

So I talked to a different guitar center and they asked me to bring it in so they could look at it. I did, and they were really great, the best customer service ever. The bass was sold to me 50 bucks below the sale price because of some scratches, and worn finish on the bridge. Even though the sale was over, the guy was willing to give me the one they had there for the same price I paid for mine, even with the 50 dollar additional discount. That was so cool of him... Best GC experience ever. BUT... that one also had two bridge pieces lifting up, and there was a definite "hump" in the neck. I checked out a schecter damien (the one with the bat inlays).. the neck was twisted. It had a wicked bow on the E side, but the G string was lying flat against the frets, and the action was adjusted higher on the G sided then on the E side. finally I looked at an omen, and if you turned it face down, it would cut out and you'd get no output. I decided to just take the refund , I'm way too gunshy about the newer schecters.

Then, on the way out the door, there was guy waiting at the little "check in desk" for someone to help him get his guitar repaired... not sure what model it was, but it was a week old schecter. like I said... SCARY

Bad batch.

{censored} like this happens. Get a whole production run with issues, and they spread across the market everywhere. Happens a lot, nothing but bad publicity for good products.

I've liked quite a few Schecters, but just didn't fit my hands for me. GREAT EMG tone. Get a thru-neck, and you're good to go.

I've actually got my eye on a cv-4. which is what I wanted originally but couldn't find one. now I just have to wait for my refund from GC to get deposited into my bank (the trouble I get for having bought it with my debit card) and hopefully it will still be available by the time the money is back in my bank. They SAID 48 hours, but maybe longer because of the weekend. Anyway, the cv-4 I found is a 2006, so it should be safe from this current run of wackiness

The Schecter 5-string I played a few years ago was really nice. Played, sounded and looked great. I agree it may be a bad batch but that could be indicative of a larger quality control problem, which would be sad (and scary), especially since I really dig their new Rickenfaker bass.

I got both of mine used and set them up myself. They are rock solid. The only thing I've done was replace a busted input jack ( wear and tear) and cleaned a scratchy pot. Sorry to hear about your bad times but if you really like 'em I think you should keep looking at 'em.

Well, I have rather limited experience with 'em - during GC's last Labor Day sale, I bought a brand new Stiletto Elite-5, and really wanted to love that instrument - but even after a pro set-up, it still didn't play all that well, and even though it had EMG-HZ's like both my Spector 5ers, it would flat out disappear in a band mix - no matter what I tried... - so, I took advantage of GC's 30 return policy, and took it back for a full refund - no hassles, no questions asked... Sure, I ate the set-up costs - but I ended up finding another Spector Q5 Pro through Daddy's for a good enough price that in the overall scheme of things, I didn't make out badly at all...

My current Schecter is a Hellraiser-4, and I like it very much... I played this bass several times over the course of a couple of weeks, and bought it used - but it's actually cleaner than alot of "new" instruments you'll typically find in a music store... I had no problem at all getting a nice low action - which tells me it's fret work is pretty good - and I've gotten a good band mix sound out of it for 2 totally different situations - modern rock/metal, and 80's/90's rock/metal - by using different settings on the 2 pin DIP switch on the preamp...

At this time, I wouldn't buy a Schecter unless I had a chance to look it over carefully, and play it a few times over a few days time period - given my experiences... I sure as hell wouldn't buy one off of ebay...

I have to say that other than their Performers - which are cheap crap - I haven't seen a Spector that wasn't pretty good...

I have a Studio 5 that I got in Jan of '06, and everytime I pick it up, I always wonder why I don't play it more often. I've had some wear/tear issues with it, but nothing out of the ordinary for a $500-600, abused 3-year-old bass.

I thought I got a lot of bass for what I paid. It's a shame if they've let quality slide, since.

BTW, our they still made in Korea (in what I believe to be the same place every Korean-made guitar is also built)?

do you know what year your hellraiser is?

I played about five MM Bongo's at a guitar center, all had very bad setup issues and were not playable. I guess we should all stay away from EBMM products too, huh? Poom, you buy a used from GC bass, have an issue that's probably not even an issue, and play a couple that aren't set up and judge the whole brand? You are smarter than that. Schecter's are solid and value basses, there are no widespread qc issues with them. Don't ever let the stock you find on the wall of any GC or SamAsh ever be the evidence you use to judge a brand.

I really want to find (and be able to afford) a CV-4 like the one I had. I don't like the newer EB-style toilet bowl versions.

T3ch -- I had this exact same bass! hah. Damn fine bass. Definitely the best looking and playing Schecter I ever used.

I'm smart enough to be objective.. the bass I bought was NEW, not used. And the issue that probably wasn't an issue went from weak output to no output due to a bad blend pot (how is that not an issue)

The ones I played since then werent just setup issues, two of them had bridge pieces that were pulling away from the body and the screws wouldn't tighten. One had a twisted neck, not a setup issue, it was twisted. I played one that only played in certain positions.

NONE of these were set up issues. these were all defects. I'd be stupid to NOT wonder about the quality of their current offerings

My stiletto studio is a dream come true! great feel, sound, looks! any of the other stilettos will get lost in band mixes without a mid boost (the three band EQ on the studio gives a nice mid boost) and the necks feel chunky, the studio is slim - necked and beautiful!

Sorry to hear about your experience, must be a bad batch. I remember in the 90's when Gibsons had a bunch of finish/setup flaws, it happens...

and I have to admit, the one I played a few years ago that I really fell for was one of the ones with the ovally pickguard on it. I know you don't like that style but I thought it was great

Poom, nothing ata a GC is new merch, especially if it's hanging on a wall. The abuse those basses take from metalhaed wanna be's and 'techs' that donalt know a thing about a proper set, can be the cause of everything you've noticed. My point is that you might not be seeing what Schecter is, and more how GC handles their stock. Your experience seems to go against just about everyone's who've owned and played them regularly...

I see that point, but I was messing around with ibanez and epi's and a laguna while I was there, and didn't find that many problems. I'm not saying you are wrong, I'm just saying that from what I saw, the schecters at GC had more problems than other basses there. So logically I wondered if GC got a bad run of schecters or something
