Members Rowka
I've got a Takamine ABG that I need to do a setup on. Of course it's not as simple as it is on an electric as I've got to file down the bridge saddle. What is considered a reasonably low action for an ABG (measured at the 12th fret)? Moderators Kindness Posted February 21, 2009 Moderators Share Posted February 21, 2009 I consider about 0.100" to be pretty low for acoustic basses.
Members Rowka
That's pretty low. Would that be your target?
Moderators Kindness Posted February 21, 2009 Moderators Share Posted February 21, 2009 We both agree that's pretty low. My target would be based on the player's playing style. I have no idea what yours is. I have my main electric basses up close to 0.100" on the E. If I were setting it up for myself, I'd probably target 0.120" and work my way down to it slowly, checking my results as I went. I might not consider that low, but I'd consider it reasonable. Members Rowka
Cool. I was figuring on starting at .125 and going from there. It's really quite high now and I've got lots of proud saddle to work with. It came with black tape wounds (Labella?) on it. Any string suggestions? I've never owned one myself, so I don't have any useful experience with playing around with ABG strings. (I have worked on their bridges/setups though, so my advice above wasn't just made up. )
Members SB900LE
I have a cheap ABG that has a truss-type nut in a block under the bridge, inside the body; looks like it takes an allen wrench. Any info on what that does? Input appreciated.

Members SB900LE
It's a truss rod nut. But it has a truss rod nut at the base of the neck, at the front of the body. The nut about which I'm inquiring is literally under the bridge. Is that also a truss rod nut?

Does it hold the bridge onto the body? I do know the easiest way to find out.

Members SB900LE
I'd done a quick google search in the past, and only found this possibly-pertinent reference to such a nut, in a HC review of the Fender BG-29 (not the bass I have): "Features : 9Single cut short scale acoustic bass with a fishman transducer bridge.Truss nut at the bridge area.Satin wood finish (not sure of type, but its decent)" Does that help any? No real clues there, eh EDIT: by the way, this bass has no pickup
