I'm looking for a simple portable recorder that I can use to record stereo output from a mixer. I need 5+ hours of continuous recording time, but other than simply getting sound into it and getting it back off, I don't need much else.

The first thing I've stumbled across so far is something like this: http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/Line-6-BackTrack-Instant-Replay-Recorder-Mic?sku=250002

Anyone have any experience with it, or have any better ideas?

Zoom H4.

They're great! Very easy to learn, handy and small, can hold 6+ hours of CD quality stereo on a 4G card, and have a better recording quality than what the Stones and Beatles originally had. Well, maybe not that last one, dunno. But, they are very good for their size and cost. Options include built-in stereo mics, external mics, and mono-stereo-4track recording, with MP3, 44.1kHz stereo and other modes.

Well why am I surprised that I got a pile of good responses here, but not the stupid old recording forum? :p

Right now we're running into my mbox, to my laptop. But we want to start streaming the audio across the net in addition to recording it, and I don't have much faith in our ability to get that all going into/through my laptop. I don't want to add a 3rd laptop to the setup (we've got mine plus one for our VJ equipment), so I'm looking for something like a minidisc recorder or the Zoom's that people suggested. MP3 recording is perfectly fine with me, and the ability to record to SD cards is a total plus. I'll have to look into both suggestions.

I had no idea that minidiscs could hold that much. i thought they only held around the length of a CD! My little brother has one that he's not using, I'd bet. That might be the best option. :D

I've used an M-Audio Microtrack several times for field audio work, and it was just fine.

Uncompressed Minidisc will only hold about the same amount of audio as a CD, but at the highest compression level (which your brother's player may or may not record at, depending on its age), you can put 320 minutes on a disc. If you want to record uncompressed audio, I wouldn't recommend the MD route.

Nice to see you back.

I have been using the M Audio Micro track ii for a year now on a weekly basis and it has not given me many problems once they updated the firmware that is you have to be careful when handling it though because it is easy to hit a button that you dont need to hit:mad::facepalm::o

but in all it is a pretty good and simple to use hand held recording device.
