"Hello, fake tree!"

:D

There's a guy that used to live in CO named Bobby Kovacs, and that dude would harass anyone and everyone he could. He would email you off of your CL ads to go to his local band webforum, and if you responded, he would start in on you. He sent me pictures of his black belt certificate, threatened to find me and beat me up, all kinds of {censored}. He never showed up. :idk:

But it was enough to get his ISP to shut him down, he had dozens of complaints filed against him with the cops and nothing ever came of it.

Now he apparently lives in FL, and entertains himself by posting fake racist ads on CL for a band he feuded with. That band changed it's name because of him, but he doesn't know that, he still posts pictures of the singer with racist tirades, total defamation of character bull{censored}. But he gets away with it.

I meant right shoulder. ;)

I don't know how much detail I care to get into here really, but it's a pretty general question... can the police actually do anything about stuff like this? Is there a cyber equivalent to a restraining order I guess. :idk:

Even knowing a way to learn the persons identity would go a long way. It would tell me who to start swinging Louis(ville) at.

Thanks for a real answer (finally).

I kind of figured that, but thought I'd pose the question all the same.

How was the IP learned? Can you learn an IP from a gmail account? Should I contact them and ask for the IP of the person using that account?

yes, you can see the IP of a person sending you an email in gmail, or most any other webmail client: http://technofriends.in/2007/08/29/tutorial-find-the-ip-address-of-sender-in-gmail/

Could you get the RCMP to send them an email for you?

If it's a true crime, then I'd guess that is likely a step one to the process. I don't rightly know. I'm hoping to avoid bringing the real police into this, but will if I have too.

Finding out the IP and turning that into any useable info to scare the person into knowing they've been found out as to me knowing who it is will likely be enough.

Reading over Gmail's privacy policies and how they are structured, you'd think that they created themselves to be the perfect harbour for this type of thing. They won't even release an IP address to authorities to assist in a criminal investigation without being subpeana (sp?) first.

And I would expect no less from any other ISP, website, or online company. Unless they have a judges order (subpoena), they better not give out my IP to anyone.

I'm not a real lawyer, so take this with a grain of salt, but I believe most restraining orders include restricting attempt to contact as well. This probably also includes digital contact.

Of course, the last time I couldn't get someone to stop sending me emails, I just set up a filter to automatically delete her emails. I assume she has since stopped, although really I have no clue.

That was step one. I've since blocked 7 email addresses, a facebook profile and changed my settings to not allow anyone to see anything unless already a friend.

I've also changed all my passwords as part of this process has tipped me off that they have been able to see into my hotmail account at some point. When I get home I'll be putting a password to lock out the PC itself. My password was totally inocuous before, it didn't relate to anything that could possibly be figured out by knowing me, it's even more so now.
