Ok what is all the hoopla about these guys? The only song I ever remember hearing was that 'Epic' one and it sounded whiney and silly to me...could never get into it. And there are a lot of hardcore fans out there so which songs/albums/whatever do you guys really like?

Really, it's hard to wrong with any of the albums they did with Mike Patton, so that would be:

The Real Thing (this is the album with Epic)

Angel Dust

King For a Day... Fool for a Lifetime

Album of the Year

If you're looking for something just to get started with them though, maybe just get a greatest hits CD. That will cover a little bit of all of the above albums... there's so many good songs its hard to name them all

I'm in the minority here (surprising, ain't it?) in that I never cared much for the Patton stuff. I was a big fan of "Introduce Yourself" back in the day, and still think it's pretty cool. I played in a band that opened for them at TT the Bear's in Cambridge, Mass way back when - and it was a complete blast. "We Care A Lot" was big on the indie scene at the time, and that whole album was a lot of fun. MUCH less "metal" and certainly less polished, along with being sillier and sloppier, than later stuff.

The back half of The Real Thing is amazing. Angel Dust is a great album that can get a little dark for people at times, and I liked Album of the Year too.

King for a Day, I just didn't care for a lot. I can listen to it but it's not my fav.

Anything with Chuck Mosely (the We Care a Lot album) I'd say skip.

What they said. ^^^

If you want to avoid goofy, ignore parts of all of their catalog. If you want a "good" signer, ignore their first two albums. Faith no More, and Introduce Yourself. If you want their best stuff, I'd say go for Angel Dust, King for a Day, and The Real Thing.

They all have good stuff on them though.

I am a hardcore, long time fan of the band. They are my holy grail, #1 desert island band.

Though I go through phases where I appreciate any of Patton's albums more than the others, I will always refer to Angel Dust as their one masterpiece amoung the masterpieces. For my money, I don't know if any album will ever grab me quite like it did ever again.

Which makes this kind of ironic. But I chose this piece because it was a representation of the band as a whole, not just one specific album.

I respect the Chuck Mosley years for what they were, just like the Courtney Love years (months?) before that. But it's just not the same. Patton kills Mosley and leaves him to whither and die. Speaking of, Mosley is releasing a new album soon IIRC. I wonder if he will open for them.

There is some good tunes on the older {censored}, but not much IMHO. Though "We Care A lot" will always make me crack a smile when I listen to it, no matter how dated it might be.
