Members ehutch79
I was hoping you all could help me find a decent, reasonably priced amp. the primary use would be recording an album we're writing now, then potentially playing out at small dive bars. Definitely a punk sound. I need some nice punchy, growling attack. I was thinking of precuring an avatar 2x10 cab. are there any suggestions for affordable bass rigs for punk rock that arn't poop on a stick? Members T. Alan Smith
Your describing what the Peavey TNT was made for. If you prefer a head/cab setup, I recommend a GK 800RB atop an Avatar for optimum bang for buck, but I would think the neo 2x12 would work better for your situation. Members T. Alan Smith
What's your budget? He mentioned "reasonably priced" and Avatar. He also mentioned playing in dives where I wouldn't want to bring anything that couldn't easily be replaced. He should have at least $600 to work with if he wants to be "reasonable." My thoughts exactly, but he could even go with a 400RB to save a bit of cash.
Members ehutch79
budget isnt really fixed, but say up to 700$ combined head and cab would be the upper limits maybe more if it was really worth it. the 800rb is probably out of my budget range. Members ehutch79
the 400rb is way more likely to happen, i can always borrow a cab.
Members JeffBass
Forget a 2x10 cab, get the Avatar 212 NEO cab at 4 ohms for $369.00. More sound and fullness. Then get the new Carvin BX500 tube/solid state hybrid amp for 400 bucks brand new.A compact, 500w stack delivered for around $800.00. Can't go wrong. Members T. Alan Smith
the 400rb is way more likely to happen, i can always borrow a cab. The 400RB is very nice, but only a few hundred watts. If you go this route, make SURE you get a big cab to move air. Unless your band is on the quiet side, a 2x10"(even at 4 ohms) will not cut it with a 400RB. Not enough headroom, and not pushing enough air. Ideally, you'd get the 1001RB or 800RB and push at the very least a 1x15'' or 4x10"...if not a 2x15". Sinking all your hard earned ca$h into a rig that keeps you from performing your best sucks balls. I've been there. If your only going to get the head and borrow a cab, get a higher powered head so your set(for the future).

Members rpsands
These days I'm having a hard time finding used 800 RBs out there for sale, and they don't seem to be quite as cheap. Hartke is the new cheapness rig imho A 3500 is about as loud as an 800RB and sounds okay, while being able to be had for 150-200 bucks (unlike the 300-400 of an 800rb:P ugh). Here's an example: http://seattle.craigslist.org/est/msg/1051641851.html Assmaster wants 450 for it

I'm sure a lot has changed in that time.
Members gonzobassman
I know someone with a Mesa Boogie Venture (650 watts,2-12s) that can be had for a good price!!! Lots of tone shaping, and plenty of balls on that one!!!
Members JeffBass
Bass Guitar Magazine did a head-to-head comparison (current issue) between a new Hartke 115 combo vs. a new Trace Elliot 115 combo and the Hartke won. They thought it was a bit most versatile but the Trace put out more "classic" rock tone. The fact that the Hartke was competitive surprised me. They are nice, a definite upgrade. I could build an amp out of toothpaste tubes and telephone wire, and it would compare better in a magazine shootout as long as I bought more advertising space than the competitors.C7
