Members jrkman
I'm ready to get started on my bass build. It's going to be a Jazz bass with a fanned fret replacement neck. My questions are: I've read a lot of good things about the Lindy Fralin pickups. Have any of you had any experience with these? What type of nut would you all recommend? Members Crescent Seven
Do you have a bridge to accommodate the fanned fret setup? Will it fit on that body?C7

I figure the only thing I don't trust myself to do is the nut.

Members s4001
Lindy rewound an old Ric pickup I had. He did an awesome job with it. From my experience, I highly recommend him.

I didn't want you to overlook that part if you hadn't thought about it already. What I meant by fit was, is there enough room on the body to get the E string bridge far enough back?C7

Members emmaporkchop
Seems like a basic graphite nut should work fine. Good luck on the build.

I don't have much experience with different nuts. I know there's plastic, bone and graphite. I just don't know which is best.
Members Crescent Seven
Thanks. I don't have much experience with different nuts. I know there's plastic, bone and graphite. I just don't know which is best. My understanding is that almost any material is better than plastic, except maybe Jell-O. I think the neck manufacturer should be able to tell you the slot widths on the nut. Regardless of your choice of material, buy a couple of extras because bone and graphite are brittle, and it's easy to make a mistake on the first try. If you make a perfect one on the first try, you can sell the others on eBay. C7

I have time right now and they're not too expensive. Maybe I will try to do it myself. Thanks for the info.
Members jrkman
Really ugly and pretty damn expsensive! Yes they are fairly expensive and not too pretty but they're supposed to be comfortable and sound good and that's what I'm going for.
Members Emprov
I had a set of Fralins in one of my J's. I liked them but I prefer the Nordstrand NJ4's that I have now.
Members matou
Really ugly and pretty damn expsensive! $580.00 list - Ebony fretboard Prices do not include shipping. I think they look alright, but I can't see why they should cost any more than any other neck.

I could see them costing a little more but yea they are up there. I'm guessing they charge that much because they can.

They are a different trip, that's for sure. I liked it when I played the Dingwalls, but it's not something I'd seek out. I would think that after you trained your fingers to fret in different places, it would be hard to switch back to a normal neck. The learning curve on the fanned frets isn't very steep, though. It starts to feel natural fairly quickly, but I still had to watch my hand.C7
Moderators Kindness Posted March 2, 2009 Moderators Share Posted March 2, 2009 I like Falins. I prefer Aeros. I'd use many others. I use bone nuts. I wouldn't suggest you make you own though. When you know what you're doing it is a day's project and one swipe too many and the nut is ruined. However, if you are patient and have the right tools and don't mind doing it a few times to get it right, then go for it.
