Upgrading from a Squier to a Squier? hmm...

BigDaddyMojo, its probably best to look used. You'll get a lot more for your money, especially these days. You should at least be able to get a Mexican Fender, maybe one that has been upgraded or if not you should have enough money left to upgrade it. :)

many on the board, including me, say the VMJ is a lot of guitar for $300...

BDM's criteria is $300-600...

I thought that the MIM Basses weren't that good.

Maybe a G&L Tribute JB2? A Mexi Jazz is a 1:1 replacement, but may not be a HUGe step up in quality. You may be able to score a Highway 1 Jazz used in that price range too.

I was going to look at a G&L JB-2. Is the HW1 comparable or better than the JB-2?

In ascending order, based on price and quality:

New Squier VM Jazz

Used 'Lawsuit' MIJ '70s/'80s Jazz from Greco, Ibanez, etc

Used '80s MIJ Squier

Used MIJ Fender

The '80s MIJ Squiers are great basses for the money.

If you can find the G&L Tribute JB-2 used, jump all over it.

You are almost always better off buying used. It's silly how much you can save on a bass; Warwick Corvette's sell for $1200 new, you can find them all over the place for $700 used. Same goes for Stingrays, USA Fenders, USA G&L's...them {censored}s just don't hold value on the used market. Yet guys are selling these basses in like-new condition, or with maybe a few blemishes. I'm willing to forget about a ding on a headstock or some buckle rash if it saves me $500.:D
