Bass Tone with No Guitarist (death from above -esque)

hey guys, my band is currently without a guitarist, and we're sick of sitting around auditioning dudes and we want to keep playing shows. i figure we have a better chance of getting the word out there if we're actually out there.

anyway, my question has to with bass tone. has anyone tried the 2-piece drums and bass thing? i'd call our sound 'hard rock', so i'm looking for a sound that's thick and bottom-y with lots of fuzz on top. something along the lines of death from above 1979 would be great, but since his rig requires running 1000 watts of power into 300 watt 8X10s (and eventually ruining the speakers) that's not really feasible for me, especially since i have to use the house's rig in most cases.

so last night i tried the following setup:

bass driver (dirty) -> bass amp

bass driver (parallel out) -> fuzz pedal -> guitar amp

the sound was ok but there were a few problems:

1. with the fuzz off, the clean sound still comes through the guitar amp. i want the 'clean' sound to be only the bass amp. do i need an a/b box for this? how do i mute a guitar pedal?

2. the sound was a bit unfocused, i.e. they didn't really sound very solid together. do i need to delay one signal or the other to get them to line up better? EQ?

3. the owner of the rehearsal space wasn't happy that i was running a bass through a guitar amp and made me shut it off. how can i ensure that i'm not ruining the guitar amp? am i ruining the amp?

thanks.

Check out the band "Clatter." The bassist posts here on HCBF from time to time. She has some YouTube clips where she goes into great detail into how she gets her tone:

The 3rd video will probably be most useful for you.

To get close to this sound, I've used my Gibson RD Artist/4003 through an Akai Unibass, and then through a Fulltone Bass Drive on the Mix output signal. The Unibass has an Effect output that causes you to get a clean (or mixable distorted) octave up. With the Unibass, you can add a lower 4th, or upper fifth to the octave. A clean bass signal comes out the Mix output clean when run in this mode. You can also run the Mix output on the pedal with all of it if you want to. The cool thing is that if you run a good fuzz, or overdrive after the Effect output, it sounds much better with some drive on it mind you... It also does a wicked 8 string bass impression set up like this.

If I run the Mix output through my Ampeg SVT and 8x10 rig, and then the Effect output through my Fender Twin, the result is gargantuan.

Beat me to it. I use one, too. Just to add, they also let you shut off "the guitar" or solo it.

They are way too expensive to actually recommend one though. If mine got stolen, I'd try out a Micro Pog and an ABY.

I wouldn't run the bass through a guitar amp, unless you are filtering out the low end or using a bass cab with it.

Yo.

Yep, my current bassist is trying to find an alternative to it for himself since he is finding my Unibass all too fun. I had recommended the Hog to him. The Pog is close, but it doesn't do the lower fourth, or upper fifth to the octave though, does it?

You need a harmonizer and a octaver. Split the signal up the chain with the octaver on a mono out and one bypass channel. Then use a harmonizer to create the next 2-6 notes in the chord.

Then add distortion after the harmonizer and whala you have a guitar tone that should be decent enough for metal gigs.

that 3rd clip was exactly what i was looking for. great sound! i was afraid for your dog in the first clip. (s)he was sniffing around and i thought

a double recto or an effects unit aren't feasible at this point so i think i'm going to try sending my 'guitar' signal into my laptop, use amplitube's harmonizer/octaver/etc/, then go out into the fuzz and into a guitar amp. what do you think?
