The Total Gym isn't bad, just monotonous.

I'm getting a used set of free-weights myself. I have a treadmill that automatically increases/decreases inclines and speed so it's a good'n that keeps my body guessing, and the only other exercises I need really are bench, few curls, shoulder presses, etc., which can all be done with a good bench setup.

I'm planning on building or buying a reverse-incline situp "rack" as those things are just awesome.

2 things:

- elliptical machine

- freeweights & bench

The elliptical ought be a MANUAL machine, not something you plug into the wall. Have your body do all the work, you'll burn those calories fast.

And a body with strong muscle burns more effectively than one without. So hit those weights. Take it light, do lots of slow lifting alternating with quick reps, move up the weight scale gradually.

And do situps & crunches. Do those things and you'll be in great shape in a few months.

I have a Total Gym and a Nordictrack (that thing is an accident waiting to happen) that I used to use. Now I just go to the gym 3 times a week.

The Total Gym is not a bad unit, and I got mine used for like $150. It works.

Lol, we had the NordicTrack too. That thing was ridiculously awful.

I can't fathom jumping rope for more than 20 mins.

Yeah 20 minutes would be world class. But couple that between shadow boxing/movement and you can burn through some calories for not a lot of cash.

I worked at a Play it Again Sports for a while, so I guess I'm qualified to answer. :p

For $500, I'd invest in a decent treadmill (I'd recommend something from Horizon, which you might be able to get for $300) and some free weights. You might also look into an elliptical, but I could never get comfortable with them because of the position they forced my knees into.

82Daion, can you pass on to us about the problems you encountered with the elliptical and your knees? If not here, please PM me. We're discussing buying an elliptical trainer due to my bad back and not wanting to run. I thought the ellipticals would be ok but my knees aren't so great either. Thanks.

I just tried them at the store-I've never had any "problems," but it just felt as though I had to keep my knees in an unnatural position to maintain posture. Some ellipticals allow you to adjust the footpad position so it's a better fit for you.

You'll probably be fine-just make sure to go to the store and try a few before buying.
