Need a 15" speaker......cheapest and best?

I'll run it through the box program when I get home. I found the dimensions of the cab and I can probably guess the tuning frequency within 10 Hz. There might be a couple of 15" speakers that will work well in that box.

What's the most you're willing to spend?

I'm clueless.....you need a certain speaker for a certain cab?

:idk:

Maybe $100?

Yes. Some speakers work well in small boxes, but most need a lot of volume to deliver a nice flat response with good low end extension. Typically, putting a speaker in too small of a box results in poor low frequency response and worse, an increase in output in the 100 Hz region which makes the cab boomy.

certian speakers will work better depending on the size of the cab and the tuning of it. thats why i asked you for its size. i dont have that program burdi is going to run for you but i knew someone would run the specs for you because we are all nice people around here :thu:

except for kindness, that dude is mean as hell.

I am familiar with that combo.

My recommendation is to get a very cheap speaker for it. I believe that you could splurge and spend $200 or more for the raw speaker and still not get the sound you want because of the cabinet size and the electronics (amp). This is NOT a gigging amp and never will be. It won't get loud enough.

Keep it under $100, new. Or look around for a used 15" bass speaker.

Uhm, the OP says no amp and no speaker, just a box...

that was just a pic I found on the net.

Well, a little history....I bought the cab and stock speaker without the amp portion for very cheap. Took the speaker out for a PA speaker cab with a blown woofer. Liked it so much I never took it out.

So now I have a completely empty combo cab.

My bass rig is an amp head and a 4x10 cab. Being cheap I'm trying to add a 15" speaker to my "rig" without spending too much. Plus I figure...I have the cab.....throw a speaker in it and go with it. :idk:

Should be, but it'll either have little or no low end, or else be pretty inefficient. Personally, I'd go with 'loud but no low end' in this case.

That's good to know, thanks!
:thu:

So what should I look for in a speaker?

Depends on what you want.

In general, small cabinets go well with low Q values and medium to high resonant frequencies (Fs), but the low end suffers. If you want lots of low end, low Q with a low Fs can get you that, but it won't have a high sensitivity. You'd need to pump a lot of power into it. In other words, there's always a tradeoff.

All right.

An Eminence Delta 15LF will work, but it will be boomy.

The speaker I previously had in mind looks to be the best bet, but it isn't cheap. The Dayton PF385-8. I have a pair of the 18" version of that speaker that served as subwoofers. They are custom eminence units made for Dayton and they are essentially Omega Pro-15A designed to work in a slightly smaller box.

It should have a -3 dB point of right around 50 Hz in that box, which is as good as you're going to get in a box that small.

The upside is that it will be very loud and if you wanted to, you could put it in a PA as a subwoofer.

Check out technical pro. just type that in on ebay search. I bought an SVT 18 off ebay. The emminence was blown. I looked around and finally tried the technical pro 18. It blew me away, it was rated at 2.5 KW and had massive tone. I have had that cab now for over three years, gigged with it regularly until recently, and it never gave me any problems. I forgot to mention, it was 100.00 new in the box.

I have a 1x15 combo "amp".....without the amp......and without the speaker.
:D
So it's just an empty cab.....but I thought adding in 15" in conjunction with my 4x10....might be a good idea....
:idk:

What's the cheapest, and best speaker out there?

I have always liked Eminence and Altec Lansing drivers.

It looks like the Technical pro 15" drivers are now $132 on ebay. The word of their awesomeness must be spreading.

Personally, I'd rather pay $150 for an American made speaker whose ratings I can trust than $130 for a chinese made speaker that weighs over 25 pounds because of its super huge magnet assembly.

Edit: Oooooh, I found the $100 unit. 120 oz. magnet and 2000 watts power handling. Pure badass!
