Members Zacman0126
I'm thinking about getting this for some home recordings: http://www.rondomusic.com/pbg2.html I'm going to be playing metal, and in any and all tunings ranging from dropped A to dropped d. Taking into account my variances in tuning, should I just be getting a 6-string? If so, which of the two from rondo, if any, would you think would be acceptable for the application? 1) http://www.rondomusic.com/product748.html 2) http://www.rondomusic.com/hxb40635.html I don't need anything fancy, just something that would be geared towards metal. Feel free to suggest one of the above, or something else in a similiar price range with any upgrades within reasonable cost to bring it to the parameters I am seeking to use it for. Thanks for your help.

I r-e-a-l-l-y like the Strat-style recessed jack on that one. The red binding and pickup covers are pretty cool too. And it comes with a scarf! Members zachoff
Either would probably be acceptable, but might be somewhat noisy... I've never played an SX other than C7's heavily modified 4 string, but I've found the electronics in cheaper instruments to generally be a bit noisy when recording. YMMV. Well like I said in the title, feel free to recommend some upgrades / modding. I'm not new to a soldering iron, I've done some mods to my various guitars, i'm just totally clueless in the Bass world. Seymour Duncan's still the bee's knee's on this end of things?

Members zachoff
Bump, come on, anyone? I've never modded a bass, but I put Kent Armstrong P90s in one of my guitars and they f'n scream. Love them. Rumor has it that Reverend used Kent Armstrong pups in their USA guitars & basses too. If that's the case, I love the way my Reverend bass sounds too. Electronics upgrades would be my recommendation for modding... Pots, wires, shielding, pups... That should probably cover it. Like I said though, it may not be noisy... I've just played a lot of cheaper instruments where that was the case.

Members JC Bass
Based off what you are looking to do, I can't imagine doing dropped A tuning on a 4-string...that just seems insane...you would be better off with a 6-string, but even then, you might end up with a "floppy" top string. Modding an SX is a lot of fun...and since the base model is relatively inexpensive, you can get a great sounding and playing bass for little green. As has been mentioned, the first thing to do is replace the jack, pots, cap and wiring with something better.
Members Poltergeist
i'd say a 5 stringer would be good enough for you. i doubt you'll NEED a 6 stringer. a 4 stringer is way less then you need for tuning to A. for metal i love basses with humbuckers. Members Zacman0126
Anybody know how the active pickups are in the rondo brands? Any good? I'm usually picky with pickups and it's the first thing I change on my guitar, so is it worth the extra price to get a Bass equipped with them or will I be just buying EMG's/Duncan's right away anyways? Members Zacman0126
one more bump for any other opinions before I pull the trigger on that six string and put some blackouts in it and swap out the other electronics (did I miss anything else? )
