Why isn't Kansas City in Kansas?

how about it's because kansas city predates both kansas and missouri (as states).

 

get this: michigan city isn't in michigan. it's in indiana. and it also predates both michigan and indiana as states. but it is (presumably) named for its proximity to lake michigan.
