Members zachoff
Looked at this page: http://www.halls.md/ideal-weight/met.htm which links to this page: http://www.halls.md/ideal-weight/body.htm Why does the medical industry still use BMI to measure healthy weight and obesity? My brother is in way better shape than me and built like a brick {censored}house. He weighs 10lbs less than me but since he's 5'10" and I'm 6'2", his BMI suggests that I'm at a healthier weight than him. I'm not. Then I look at the medical "ideal weight" range for me 6'2" 33y/o: 148lbs to 195lbs. 195 I can understand, but 148? Seriously? I haven't weighed 148 since Jr High and back then I had close to no body fat. When I graduated from high school, I was in the best shape of my life and weighed 185. Anyway, thought I'd vent. No wonder the studies find we're such an obese country... The measuring stick is flawed.
Members Hearafter
My wife bought a scale that you can program in your height and age. Then after it weighs you, it gives you your BMI, fat %, and some other {censored} I don't care to remember. How the hell does that scale know how much of me is fat, and how much is muscle? Members t3ch
Yeah. For me to be at "ideal" weight I'd have to lose 50lbs. I haven't been at that weight since I was 15 and 4 inches shorter. I've been to other countries, I'm not any different of a build than the other people my height. Then again, I think about what my dad ate for breakfast when I was growing up, a single soft boiled egg and a piece of buttered toast. One egg and a piece of bread for breakfast and that's it? That's barely a snack these days.

Members Super_Donut_Man
BMI is total BS. Doesn't take into effect MANY factors that can effect it. 140 - 184 lbs is my ideal weight. 180 isn't too unreasonable though, but I doubt I can get to that, as I have a big frame. I will admit I'm about 20-25lbs overweight, but faaaaar from being 50lbs overweight. 180 is about my goal as well, but the problem is it's hard to get there with this massive thing dangling between my legs

Members FloydianAnimal
Yea, that BMI stuff should always be noted with the fact that it doesn't take into account those who are more muscular for their height/build (which most sites do note). My buddy is 5'6" and weighs like 185 pounds or so, but he can also bench press like 350 so it's not like he's fat he's just ripped
Members lokidecat
tells me as a 34yo male that's 5'10", i should be 132 - 174 lbs. My goal weight is 185. I would look emaciated and ridiculous at 132 lbs. {censored} the BMI.
Members BottomHeavyKate
Mine says 140 - 184 and I don't see any problem with that. My sister is on the low end....and I'm above and beyond the high end. I feel the best when I'm right in the middle at 160....
Moderators ThudMaker Posted August 27, 2009 Moderators Share Posted August 27, 2009 6'2" and 148 lbs is BS. That's string bean material. No way could that possibly be a healthy weight for an adult male.
Members s4001
I forgot where I heard it, but according to that scale Tom Cruise is obese and Arnold Schartzenneger is morbidly obese or something along those lines.
Members s4001
136 lbs??? WTF. When I was 155 I had a 29" waist. That thing's messed up.
Members Offday
You have to remember all that {censored} was bassed on a servey, A servey of who? Med students of course, it was conducted by the medical profession and what better, readly available group of survey suspects do you think they had? A bunch of stressed out, nurotic kids that don't have time to eat cause they are to busy studying for their next big exam. Begin to see the light? Of course my doctor told me to "watch" my weight so I had to get it out in front of me where I could see it. Ever wonder why doctors call what they do "practice"? cause they haven't got it right yet. Members JacieFB
BMI is kind of a bad deal. I think % body fat is more telling. Although to the folks that are nay-saying the low end of the scale, it's widely published that people that are thin, even "underweight" live longer. I'm not advocating that and I'm certainly not advocating unhealthy eating. I don't have the data at my fingertips, but it is out there.
Members Ender_rpm
All I know is having shopped for men's clothing overseas, American's really are just flat out bigger. I was in the Army at the time, in really good shape, but unless I bought a 2XL the dress shirts and such fit like skin on a sausage. That's IF I could find a 2XL. Pants? Fuggedaboutit. It's not that I couldn't find the right waist or length, but the pants legs were so narrowly cut I couldn't pull them up!!! Sigh, I WAS n such great shape then

A buddy of mine was talking the other day about losing weight and equating it with losing strength. Sure, it happens. But you don't have to lose strength if/when you lose weight. Nah, if you have fat to lose it will go before your muscle/strength. It's true if you're already at 5-10% body fat and try to cut weight though.
