Questions: graduating, college, moving out and work

Well, the way I have things worked out right now, I'm going to be graduating high school a semester early, in December. I'm going to college at FKCC, in Key West. I've got a scholarship that will pay 100%. A friend of mine moved there this year. So, I've already got a place to live. I already have a job down there, transfer to the KFC.

Now, I've got 2 ways I could do this. I could move down there in January and get a head start on college, start the winter semester. But that means moving down there with almost no cash to my name. I don't think that's such a great idea.

Or I could continue to live at home and work as much as possible for 6 months to stack cash. Work 40 hours a week from January to June. By this time, my car will be paid off and I'll be able to save all my money, other than gas and cigarettes.

I want to get out of this town as soon as possible, but it's looking like it's gonna be a while.

Which path should I take? Half the people I have talked to leaned one way, with the other half favoring the other choice.

Before I move down, I'm going to sell my car. I'm buying a Honda Ruckus (scooter) to get around the island. And a CBR600RR to get back home if I have to.

What should I do?

Pay off all or most of your debt first before you move out. You will incur so many expenses that you never thought of when you move out.

I know. All the things I don't think twice about buying now are all going to suddenly disappear the day I move out. My car will be paid off in December. And my dad gave me his 2003 Saturn Ion to sell, I keep all the money. So I've got about $5-6k worth of cars to sell. Rent is $600 a month for a nice 3 bedroom stilt house on Stock Island. A block away from the school.

Move out, work 40 hours a week, live alone, support yourself, and then go to college.

Taking a year off, living alone, partying like mad, and realizing that delivering pizzas is a {censored}ty way to make a living was the single best thing I did to prepare for college. Anytime I thought to myself, "I want to quit school." I'd remember how much it sucked living on my own on $7/hour. :D:thu:

I pretty much do that now. I go to school and work like 30 hours a week. My parents are never at home, I'll go a week without seeing them. I pay for everything myself, car/insurance, gas, food, clothing. Having money and no parental supervision, pretty much means I've been partying for the last year straight every chance I get. But I still have my job and am doing pretty decent in school, 3.3 GPA last I checked. Just a side note, AP Physics is the single hardest class I've ever taken. I did some sort of velocity problem last week that took me 45 minutes and a whole sheet of paper.

AP Physics was the hardest class I had in high school as well.

If you have a car that is paid off, I would suggest keeping it for college, don't sell it and replace it. If you have something that works already, don't try to replace it, use what you've got.

Have you ever been to Key West? Having a car just doesn't work down there. Everyone rides around on scooters. You don't have to have insurance on a moped, you do with a car. A scooter gets 113 MPG, my car get 20. A car is too damn expensive. And this thing is ill.

I have absolutely zero knowledge about Key West. I do know that buying things because its "ill" is a good way to end up broke and unable to afford college. I also know that not having insurance on any motor vehicle is a very bad idea, and it can set you up to be in debt for a long long time. I also know that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

At first I really liked you scooter idea. Then I saw the picture of the Ruckus - cool looking little unit. Then I read a few reviews. It may look hot, but it looks to be *way* underpowered i.e. slow.

49cc scooters aren't exactly known for speed. My friend bought a Yamaha Zuma, topped it out at like 39.

I have a '79 Yamaha QT50 and it was awesome until someone stole it, tried to hotwire it, and then wrecked it. :( I need to get working on that thing... Probably wouldn't cost but $200 to get it running again.

Around here a lot of people get them because they have lost their license to operate a car (usually alcohol related).

Option 2. And when you get to Key West, do not buy the LCD TV, and the new laptop, and the Xbox360.... Live Spartan, and save the money.

Well, I have absolutely no desire for an expensive TV, I already have a good laptop, and there's already an Xbox 360 down there. But I don't even play video games.

Stock Island to the tip of Key West is less than 5 miles and given the traffic, speed is not an issue. Parking however, is. Most of FKCC is on Stock Island anyway.

It seems that a slow 50cc with very high gas mileage and no insurance requirements seems like a good choice. Also, it doesn't require a real motorcycle license (which at least in MA is needed for a 150cc scooter).

I graduated in December as well. I worked my ass off and paid for all my school. It was a wise choice financially, being debt free and having a down payment for a house by the time you're 25 is a great thing.

On the other hand I regret not blowing all the cash and traveling while I was young single and able to. :D

Have fun choosing your life path. Whatever you do, crazy or smart, you'll probably wonder what else might have happened. :thu:

Exactly. But I also plan on having a Honda CBR600RR sport bike for the longer drives. Getting back to my town, taking the occasional trip to Miami, or longer rides to Tampa or Orlando just for fun.

I'll probably end up staying home and working for the next 9 months. Stacking as much cash as possible to take down to Key West with me next June.

 OMG you actually used one whole piece of paper to do a homework problem?

To be fair, there was very little I did in high school that took a full page of workings.

Now, by the time I got deep into my chemical engineering courses in University I was using full exam books on a single question.
