Gary drags his ass like crazy. Slows way down, then comes back up almost to the real tempo. He has been working on the songs for a month.

Mike's take was the first time he heard the songs.

They are both going away. We having my pal who is sick drum anyway.

Singing is next. I am putting a PA speaker right in front of the singer's face. ;)

Mike - you can tell he hasn't had much time with the material from the fills and changes. However, even if he misses a fill or a change he doesn't let the beat drop (except once at the beginning), and that's important. Through the main "verse" pattern I expected snare hits on 2; he seems a bit busy with the cymbals to oblige, so you may want to work to reduce his dependence slightly on the ride and hat. He definitely has some good ideas on patterns. Give him two more practices with this material for him to figure out what he's going to do where, record him again then and compare it to Gary's now, and I think you'll have your decision made.

Gary - You took it slower and more deliberately than for Mike, and yet there's still some off-time fill work. He seems to hit his stride just before about halfway through. Overall, the line seems to fit a bit better; he does more fill work, but it doesn't get in the way IMO. That's a function of his using the toms more than the snare/cymbals on fills, and it also comes with familiarity.

Neither was an absolutely stellar performance. The deciding factor, and it's very significant, is that Mike was comparable to Gary without having had three rehearsals to learn the piece. Where Gary was better were the areas most dependent on familiarity, so like I said, if you give Mike a chance to get as familiar with it as Gary has gotten, IMO the choice will be self-evident. For that reason, I vote Mike.

what gary has that mike doesn't: pauses

in my experience, it helps alot when the drummer works with the spaces. I think gary does this. Mike on the other hand, keeps time.

If you want a tight beat, mike might be your guy

If you want an interesting beat, i think gary does it.

I understand, it's Mike's first practice, but then why is he trying to lead the band?

I am always wary of a drummer who comes to a cold audition and starts playing in the first ten seconds.
