Members Billystrat
So maybe I'm crazy, but I have a Crate practice amp with a blown speaker. The amp works fine and I could use a small practice amp by my desk while working on guitars etc. to double check my soldering. I'd hate to throw out a working amp just to buy another amp with lackluster tone. Is there a a sub $50 speaker that could handle bass? I'm looking for it to function vs. sound great. Members solderjunkie
I would use this little guy here I think you might get a decent tone from it as long as you don't push much below 60hz through it:thu:

Members fealach
That looks like a good speaker. Worlds better than what came in the amp, no doubt. If you want to stay more in line with the amp's quality/price, you can go as low as http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=290-315 I've put the 10" version in a 2X10, and it soundeh better than I expected. Not great, but not too bad either. The one in the earlier post is much better; better than the amp or its cabinet. Just remember when the amp dies to hang onto the speaker if you go that route. Thanks for the heads up. $15 can't beat that. Even if I got it and hated it, I could then at least sell the amp on CL for $20 and get the money for the speaker back! Members J.
Truth be told, most any speaker would do at least a passable job in a Crate 1x8" practice amp. I'd go for a pro sound style driver with an accordion surround over a consumer audio woofer with a foam surround. The latter tends to hyper-extend easier when faced with uncompressed bass guitar. This one will do well enough: http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=290-260The sensitivity sucks as does the frequency response, but it should be fine in that little amp. Also pay attention to the speaker's required cutout diameter. Not all 8" speakers are created equal in that regard (the same is true with all other sizes of course).
