Members Iotanka tatanka
After admiring the Fender Tony Franklin Precision bass for some time I have decided to add a Jazz bass pickup to my Fender Precision (my back up bass for live gigging) in the traditional 1960's bridge position for a little more variation in sound. I am a furniture designer/builder and am a skilled user of the router so have no fears about making the neccesary template for the job etc! Im going to buy a stock Fender Jazz bridge pickup for the job. My question is this - does anyone know how deep the routing needs to be to accommodate the pickup? Members bassesofalessergod
just about as deep as the pickup and then put some hard foam in it to raise and lower with screws someone here will be able to give an exact depth
Members Billystrat
I measured 7/8" on a Washburn body I have laying around. It's a P/J pickup configuration as well. I'd imagine you have some room to play with (height adjustments screws, foam padding etc.) BTW I stole this tip from someone else. Cut up an old mouse pad as foam. Members Apendecto
You'll want the pickup pretty high because a bridge J pickup doesn't put out as much and a pickup farther away from the bridge. I routed out mine the same depth as the P route that was already on the bass. Yo.

They're just $5.50 at Stew-Mac: http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tools/Templates/Pickup_Routing_Templates/Jazz_Bass_Pickup_Routing_Templates.html Make sure you get the wider one for the bridge position. As for depth, 1" is plenty. As Apendecto points out, the bridge pickup will need to be raised up pretty high anyway.

Members Apendecto
The route is pretty damn easy and came out professionally for me-and this was the first time I used a router. You will probably have to pick up a long drill bit for the pickup wires to get to your controls. Yo.
