Members Sugarskull
I dream of a day when it no longer becomes profitable for those corporate bastards to enslave and kill people anymore. Ontario files $50-billion suit against tobacco manufacturers TORONTO - Ontario filed a $50-billion lawsuit today against a group of tobacco companies over the health-care costs tied to smoking. The suit, which had been planned under legislation introduced in March, claims damages for past and ongoing health-care costs. The province claims tobacco-related costs currently total more than $1.6 billion per year in Ontario and that smoking accounts for the deaths of about 13,000 Ontario residents annually. When he introduced the legislation in March, Attorney General Chris Bentley said taxpayers shouldn't have to pay for health-care costs if they are caused by the alleged wrongdoing of others. British Columbia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba have all passed similar legislation. The first lawsuit against tobacco companies was pursued by four U.S. states in the mid-1990s, and led to the 50-state agreement in 1999 in which the industry agreed to pay $246 billion over a 25-year period for health-care costs that resulted from the use of its products. http://news.ca.msn.com/canada/cp-article.aspx?cp-documentid=21969253

I dream of a day when personal responsibility matters and you can't just sue your way out of every situation as a means of displacing blame. Personal responsibility. Good point. You make something that you know for a fact will kill people, cause pollution and be a constant strain on healthcare. Stop making it and get a different job. Same could be said for alcohol. Look, I do not smoke, I can't stand smokers, and the tobacco industry disgusts me. This however, is not really the way to go about it. This is no different than the dumbasses suing McDonalds because they got fat. If you want cigarette companies to pay, pass some legislation to control what they are allowed to put in it and put the tax burden on them rather than the consumer. Surprisingly the voice of reason erupts! People have been smoking tobacco and all sorts of other wacky {censored} since as long as they've discovered how. Frivolous lawsuits ain't gonna stop it. Just look at the illegal drug scene. We should be suing manufacturers of heroin, weed and cocaine if anything... Again not that I support it, but it's a huge waste of time, resources and money. I have 2 friends who have kicked cocaine, alcohol, even heroine and can't kick smoking. It's that brutal. You don't see someone with no arms and no legs going "ahh god, I really really need to drive!" but I've seen someone put down their oxygen tank try to inhale a cig through one of those throat hole thingies. My Papa died b/c of cancer and he smoked from the time he was 13 til death at 72, so it sucks, but there needs to be across the board change. Yes it's addictive, but it gives people whatever feeling they get from cigs and that's why they do it. They also made the choice to start at one point... I don't like the pick-and-choose attitude of targeting tobacco while we turn a blind eye to alcohol and in many cases illegal drug use...

I don't really see how this is relevant. Not to sound like an unsympathetic ass (which I am prone to do), but there comes a point where the person is the blame and not the cigarettes. Are they addictive as hell? Absolutely. Is it one of the hardest things to quit? Definitely. Is there absolutely no possible way to quit smoking? Uh, no. Are there no programs or medications that help to quit smoking? Nope. Some people are just going to do it, and that's their own fault. Also, I'd bet for a lot of people coming off harder drugs, cigarettes are beneficial. They probably need SOME kind of stimulation, and cigarettes offer an easy, legal way to get some relief. I'd rather my friends huff 2 packs a day then try to get their fix with meth.
Members Sugarskull
Again not that I support it, but it's a huge waste of time, resources and money. We have a healthcare system here. They're suing to recover the costs of the strain that their product has caused. I don't think it's a waste. 50 billion that doesn't have to come out of my pocket (taxes) is a good thing. I don't smoke and I don't feel I should have to shoulder that bill. Make the smoking companies pay for it.

Governments have had no problem taxing cigarette sales for decades. I personally don't believe any government has a leg to stand on by suing tobacco companies when tobacco products have been subjected to 'sin taxes' for so long. Wholesale cost for smokes is about $1-2 per pack, before taxes.

Oh no, hey, you guy sued back in the 90s, dude. We're just 10 years behind you. Your cig companies have been helping out your hospitals with millions of dollars for years. Part of the other legislation you passed is why you dont have the "Player's light Dallas Cowboys" or anything like that. You were the first people to start this battle. It's not much of a slippery slope by the example that you have led, all I see is more hospital beds opening up and doctors not moving to the states for more cash in our future. There might be downside, but your country's example has proven otherwise thus far.
