don't know where you are, but I saw the movie here in the DC area a month or so ago. And Jimmy, Jack and Edge were selected by the director/producer because they are different from each other AND have very distinct styles. It is worth a watch, and I am anxiously awaiting the DVD release.

Yeah, I read about it in Guitar World a few weeks ago. I want to check it out, but it's a rental. There's a disconnect for me in that White isn't in complete awe to be jamming with Page, and with Edge to a lesser extent.

Did you not see the bit where Page pulls out Whole Lotta Love? Jack and the Edge instantly became 12 year olds.

Exactly.

Page owns those guys big time: comparing Page to White and Edge is like comparing Babe Ruth to Little League players.

Have o agree to disagree, at least vis a vis Page and Edge. While Pagey has it all over Edge on traditional chops, he loses big time in innovation, IMO. Page's strength was taking Blues rock to it's most sublime heights, playing in a a largely traditional style, while the Edge broke free of a lot of those constraints, and used the electronic aspect of the electric guitar to it's fullest extent. Totally different philosophies.

Jack White is, however, a chump. I like his stuff, but he's in way over his head in that company.

Fixed that for you - to call anything that chump from U2 did innovative is laughable, IMO...

considering that no one was doing it before him....come on, the Edge might not be the 'best' guitar player but he was surely doing 'it' first and the followers got in line.

Saw it last month in the East Village. I really liked it. They took three guys from the different eras with three different styles (but largely similar influences) and put them together in a room to talk guitars. What's not to like :idk:

As for Jack White, I can't say I was ever a fan. But he comes across very well in this film. You'd be surprised. In some ways, he comes across as more "honest" in his approach than Page and The Edge. The other two sometimes come across as bored, rich prep-school boys who were basically "slumming it" with old Missisipi Delta blues records. For example, The Edge's parents brought him his very first guitar (a korina Gibson Explorer!) on one of their many trips to New York. In contrast, Jack White seems to have a pretty honest connection with the blues music he was so heavily influenced by, growing up dirt poor in Detroit and everything. Dunno. I found him surprisingly likable.

what about Andy Gill from gang of four?? or even Phil Manzanera from roxy music?? id say they were both very innovative and creative well before the edge.

Creative and innovative, but fairly obscure (At least in the US). There are/were tons of better blues rock guitar players than Pagey, but he had the hit records. Likewise, Andy was experimenting with the textures thing, but The Edge had the hit records, and so gets the credit. Way of the world sadly.

And technically, U2 formed a year before Go4 did :poke:

Big time.

Nothing against those other two and their music but it's just ridiculous.

If it's about rock guitar, why not choose somebody who can really play like Blackmore, Cantrell, Kirk Hamett ... I don't know, just somebody who can at least stand in the same room with Page.

I only see one icon.

My thoughts exactly.

Edge was and is fairly "innovative" - but he lacks the depth and maturity of Jimmy Page; his echo schtick kind of gets real old, real fast.

The biggest knock IMO is the fact the neither White nor Edge has demonstrated the ability to play lead guitar in any way, shape or form (beyond rudimentary pentatonic-based excursions that any 1st year guitar student could play with ease.)

And this is a requirement for being a solid, productive and creative musician? God help us all if it is.

This thread is a good case in why music shows should not be cast by and for other musicians. This sounds super interesting because of the varied style and backgrounds. Anyone who can't appreciate the differences without knocking the musicians they dislike has no right calling themselves a musician at all.

I wouldn't mind "the edge" playing a chord once in a while, just so I know he knows some.

U2 was kind of a cool new wave band back in the day and I kinda like Jack White's retro style, it's just that ... pairing them with Page is absurd.

What a bunch of bull{censored}.

I guess Pat Metheny isn't a musician either, since he "knocked" Kenny G.

Here's the thing: the video is meant to spotlight those artists GUITAR SKILLS (if it weren't, then why the focus on the 3 of them in a room together with only guitars?)

The thing is, 2 out of the three have rudimentary guitar skills at best.

That doesn't mean they aren't great artists, or even great musicians: it just means that they are relatively mediocre guitarists - not a good choice for this type of video.
