Members Killress
My 10 year old brother has been playing bass for about a year. He has a Squier bass, and an Ibanez amp. He WORSHIPS Flea, and his current setup can't get a very 'Flea' sound. I play guitar, so I don't know anything about bass. What kind of amp would you recommend that sounds great that isn't too costly. Thanks. -Killress

Members Ender_rpm
Flea sound = Music man style HB into a GK rig. You don't mention what style of bass he is playing, but perhaps one of the backline combos would work? As in most gear, good sound= expense, you get what you pay for. Members slapthefunkyfour
I've got a Crate B220 that I'm fixing. I'm willing to give it away to the right person who needs it. You pay the shipping, and I give it away for free. There are a couple people who have requested it, but I'm still taking applications. It's about 70-80 pounds, so shipping might be too much for somebody as far away as NY.
Members bassman1956
How big a room do we need to fill with sound? And how much a budget? I'd say a used GK MB150, but I bet that's over your budget. How about used Roland Bass Cube, 30 or 100? The amp modelers (7 options + flat) give a large variety of tone scape possibilities, and the included effects (chorus, delay, wah, flanger, reverb) can substitute a few years worth for a 10-year-old. The 100 comes with a 4 band eq and a bit more power. Yes, both can do low B's. Often available for $150 to $200 used for the 30, and $250 to $300 used for the 100. Add 30% for brand-new. I have a 30. I'm keeping an eye out for a good deal on a 100. The 30 ain't goin' nowhere!
Members Killress
He enjoys playing funk by the way. And it's not like he's going to be playing in front of huge crowds any time soon. He has a 15W, he would like something louder that sounds less weak. Members timmit65
If the Crate deal doesn't work out, I'd say take a look at Tryanor (Yorkville).
Members bassman1956
Take him to a music store, and check out the options. You don't have to buy, they're very used to that. So, don't be scared to ask for assistance but say no.
Members Darkstorm
Peavey is also allaways a very relaible overall good choice especially for budget minded. Peavey minx110's are a fave of mine for little bass combos. For flea sound that largely requires a bass with humbucker pups and the flea style slapping like a looney to create that sound well. lol. (Does like fleas bass playing). O btw I's say no to the new flea basses. Overpriced low qaulity with mediocre at best fretwork.
Members Billystrat
What kind of Squier is it a Jazz or a P-bass? A 2 pickup Jazz Bass would be a great start. Pretty much anything will sound better than a 15 watt practice amp! I'd look for a 100 watt combo with at least a 12 or 15 inch speaker if he's going to play out. Peavey is great for decent tone, power and reliability. Fender, GK, and Hartke also make nice combos. Also Flea uses GHS strings which are known to be bright.
