"We've never had this problem of young people being obese like we have today," said Gen. John Shalikashvili, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

He calls the rising number of youth unfit for duty a matter of national security. "We should be concerned about how this will impact this overstretched Army and its ability to recruit."

Does this concern anybody else? I guess we can only hope that our future "out-of-shape" troops will only be matched against other countries out-of-shape troops.

Why do we need to be in shape when we got bombs?

:cop:

And bomber pilots just sit around, anyways.:cop:

We should get mech-warriors.

If we would've had more drive-thrus at the time, many would have avoided dodging the draft.

I couldn't join because I already had a record when I was 18... they would rather have Mama's Boys with good grades and no life-experience.

because they are more suitable to following orders..those like you would THINK and this is a big no-no in the army

If by "life experience" you mean being a criminal, then yes, that's something they don't want. I have no problem with that. I know several "smart" "mama's boy's" currently serving right now. They are physically and mentally in outstanding shape and I thank God we have them protecting us.

I'm curious to know what are the numbers on obesity alone.

When I was young, gettin' busted was a sure ticket into the service.

Guys used to ask "What are you in for?"

For most, it was reefer, but one guy from Florida told me he got popped poachin' 'gators.

I was an army recruiter for a while, and let me tell you, there are a lot of ways to disqualify someone, and the army is the most lenient of all the branches in terms of entrance qualifications. Obesity isn't even the most serious, for a while there the army had this pilot program where they were allowing people who exceeded the body fat percentage to enlist, and then spend time at a fat camp type thing prior to starting basic. they're trying the same thing now with kids who have no HS diploma, they go through an army sponsored GED program prior to starting basic training.

The big things that disqualify people are criminal charges, which are mainly drugs or DUIs/alcohol related, any drug or alcohol charge requires a waiver, more than one of those charges and your chances of being able to enlist drop sharply. tattoos used to be an issue, now it's only if they are gang related or offensive. medical problems, even something you would think is minor, can keep someone out of the military. ADHD(which 75 percent of young americans seem to be diagnosed with these days) can keep you out. And of course, a lot of people that do qualify, and decide to join, invariably end up failing the entrance drug test

I think you've touched on both the root of and potential solution to this problem.

So now I have to rely on all these fat, lazy, stupid kids for my retirement AND my future healthcare? I'm now supporting assisted suicide legislation.

A Russian site said that? No way!
Plus, waiting until the day after Veteran's Day to bag on the troops was a classy move
:thu:

technically, he's not bagging on the troops, but americans in general. it could actually be looked at as kind of a compliment, that the people in uniform are the top 25% of the american population.
