OT: True stories from the CHP

My brother became a CHP officer a few months ago and he just started his solo shifts last week. On his 3rd or 4th day solo, he was driving around 60mph on a local freeway (880) in the middle lane and there was a guy on a brand new rice rocket with dealer plates right in front of him. The far left lane all of a sudden opened up and, seizing the opportunity, the guy on the bike takes off, pulling a wheelie for what my brother said was about 100 yards. My brother hit the lights and took out after him, reaching speeds of 115 pretty quickly and the bike was still pulling away. As you can guess, the opening in traffic didn't last forever and, as soon as the bike hit traffic, he was gone, leaving my brother pretty much with his pants down in front of a bunch of other motorists. I guess they gave him a pretty good ribbing when he got back to the office. :D

And they can't just go to his house to wait for him using the plate numbers to track him down?

Dealer plates. Even if he had plates, it would've been pretty difficult for my brother to read the numbers when the guy was pulling away from him while doing a wheelie.

And even then, if he had a helmet on (which in California is unlikely) you would not be able to prove who was actually driving...

IIRC the owner would need to account for the vehicle. I think he would have been presumed guilty unless he could prove that he wasn't the one on the bike.

i tried to call the local police on a rider who was passing people in turn lanes, doing wheelie's etc in the middle "suicide lane" and struck the side of the van I was driving. The cops pretty much said that there is nothing they can do, even though I gave them bike, jacket, helmet, tag number, etc. because unless they catch them in the act, they can't prove who was actually driving... (no damage was caused to van, just folded in mirror)...

In reality, they're far too busy to spend time away from their beats so it's pretty much a mute point anyway. I'll have to ask him though, it'll be good for future reference. :thu:

Let me know... Especially since I bought a motorcycle a few months ago...

I can't outrun him for speed, but around here I can get off road and go places a cruiser cannot... :cop:

Which one is your brother?

:poke:

And...tell him "thanks" for doing what he does. It is a thankless job. As a public school administrator, I worked closely with the police and sheriff departments and Child Protective Agency, etc. I admire what they do.

hey Emprov! "Presumed guilty"? Are you sure that's how it works?:poke:

With photo radar, yes. If there's distortion that prevents a good view of the driver, then I believe that you can still be ticketed unless you provide proof that someone else was behind the wheel. Could be wrong about that but IIRC, I've heard that's the case. Presumed innocent....unless there's state or county revenue on the line.

Actually I believe it is the opposite. The county/state has to prove that it was you behind the wheel. There was a story posted here a few months ago about that guy that was wearing a monkey mask when he was driving through tolls and not paying. He only got busted becasue they staked out his house and saw him putting on the mask in his car.

Don't try it. On-road/off-road, fast/slow, whatever. Trust me on this.

Funny story, too bad it's things like that which give sport bike riders like me a bad rep
