Members Chlo_treacher
And OH MY GOD I'm officially now in heaven!!! Never truly appreciated the precision bass up until now but dayum I'm fookin gagging to get one!!!! The only problem is they all seem to be a grand more than I've got. Plus it doesn't help that I've just lost my saturday teaching job so saving might take a while.... who's got one here and whats a good feature to look for in them? I noticed the neck of the one I'm using is really nice. Also when it comes to using a pick, is it better to have a maple neck or rosewood? I've got a jazz with a rosewood neck so I'm thinking maybe have a p with a maple?? the band I'm in is on my sig so feel free to have a nosey and get back to me. also colour...white, black, natural??? GAH so many decisions and not enough money for any of it!!!
Members jackcheez
My only advice is play it before you buy if possible. There have been so many made with so many different ingredients...it's mind boggling. I like a maple neck myself, but I'm not sure it really makes any difference. Members Thumper
Check out a maple-board '57 reissue when you get a chance. I had an early '80s MIA model and I loved the flatter board radius.

Members knuckle_head
Be willing to live with the aesthetic you find - play what you can and base your choice on the one that behaves/sounds best. The badge and the model leave an awful lot more to consider. I haven't owned a P in 20 years, but I love 'em too.

I had an early '80s MIA model and I loved the flatter board radius. Very nice. A friend has the 62 RI and it's decent too, but RW only as far as I know. I second the need to have a maple board though, every needs one in their stable.
Moderators Kindness Posted November 30, 2009 Moderators Share Posted November 30, 2009 holy shit mate my knees have gone gooey  Well those two cover the two basic schools of split coil P basses, the '57 and the '62. Get one of each and be done. Of course, then there are them fancy PJs...
Members Chlo_treacher
ah yes the pyjama bass. not too much of a fan of those to be honest, got a jazz anyway and think i just need a classic american p bass. are your ones new or vintage? thats the other question.... Moderators Kindness Posted November 30, 2009 Moderators Share Posted November 30, 2009 are your ones new or vintage? thats the other question.... The burst one is a Lakland Glaub (Jan. 2006) and the white is a Fender '57 RI (2007 I believe). I've played numerous P basses of various vintages and have no reason to select new over old or vice versa. The real choice is good vs. bad, which you know after holding the instrument in your hands. GAH so many decisions and not enough money for any of it!!! I know that feeling. Personally, I love having an instrument I can treat like a instrument and not a land mine. I took my Squier and added a Bartolini P replacement pickup + new wiring/pots/cap/shielding + fret work and got a dam fine bass. It can easily come in under $400 all said. The one P bass that played better was a Lakland Duck Dunn that IIRC had been Plek'd.
Members MikeMess
I got love for the P-Bass. I play my Duck Dunn in my cover band. The 55-02 gets the nod in my two other bands. I'd play the P more if it was a fiver.
Members AussieMark
I started with a beat up '76 with dowels holding a broken headstock together ... Then I bought a lovely original '66 .... but then I discovered Bill Nash ..... and Tokai Hard Punchers are nice too ....

Members Renfield
I'm not sure if mine counts as a P still or not, it has 3 humbuckers.
